Learning in Action
Word Work: Over the fortnight the Grade 6 students have been learning about the morphology and etymology of Latin numbers. Through their word work sessions, students have decoded words by breaking them into their morphemes to build understanding.
Literature: Over the last two weeks, we have continued reading Once by Morris Gleitzman. Through the main character Felix's perspective, the novel explores the harsh realities of war, the power of hope, and the resilience of the human spirit. The students of grade 6 have been discussing the novel, having in-depth conversations with peers, and making connections. Students have also continued summarising the novel and using Once in their reading goals to practice independent skills including reading fluently, understanding sentences and inferring meaning through text.
Students have thoroughly enjoyed the reading of Once and if your child is interested it is a series that they can continue to read at home. The other books in the series are titled Then, After, and Now.
Through Once, students have also been writing information reports based on Poland, the setting of Once. They have continued learning facts about Poland, including its flora and fauna, taken notes, and written paragraphs that include a topic sentence and concluding sentence.
Preview: The students will finish the reading of Once by the end of the term as well as complete their information reports and a book review. They are looking forward to sharing these with you at our Open Afternoon.
Maths: Students are continuing their Daily Review sessions as part of our approach to activating working memory by retrieving concepts that have been previously taught. These quick, 20-minute sessions are designed to reinforce learning by posing questions on a variety of mathematical concepts. During these sessions, students are asked to write answers, explain their thinking, and demonstrate their understanding. This process not only helps solidify their grasp of the material but also allows teachers to offer immediate feedback and address any misconceptions that may arise.
Students are continuing to work on their individual maths goals, which are tailored to their specific needs in the areas of whole number and place value. This focused approach allows students ample time to meet with the teacher, practise, apply and demonstrate their learning over two weeks. These goals include finding factors and multiples as well as the highest common factor and lowest common multiple, representing numbers in different ways including index notation and prime factorisation and adding/subtracting negative numbers. Students have also been investigating perimeter and area of a range of simple and complex shapes. They have created their own shapes to measure and applied formulas to find the perimeter and area.
Preview: Students will complete a pre-test for multiplication in order to set goals for Term 2. Students will also complete an investigation on area and perimeter, a concept we have been exploring over the last 3 weeks.
Knowledge Rich: Students have been learning about the Australian Government, aimed at deepening their understanding of key topics such as the history of Canberra becoming the capital, the roles and functions of the government, including the Senate and House of Representatives, and the workings of democracy. Students have spent time also looking at other types of government around the world and discussing the benefits and disadvantages of them all.
Canberra Camp:
We’re thrilled to be heading to Canberra for camp during the second week of Term 2 (28th April - 2nd May).
Harmony Day:
Harmony Day celebrates the country's cultural diversity and promotes respect, inclusiveness, and a sense of belonging for all Australians. Today at LPS, we wore orange to recognise and celebrate Harmony Day.
