Learning in Action

Literacy

We are nearing the end of our novel War Horse, and the students' engagement has been fantastic. Their curiosity about the story continues to grow, and they are sharing their emotions and thoughts after each chapter.

In writing students have begun learning about the structure of persuasive writing. They are exploring the topic of whether horses should be used in war and will be writing their own persuasive pieces on this subject. As part of their writing, students must use a rhetorical question, use persuasive language, and tier 2 vocabulary words. We have also revisited subordinating conjunctions and how to create complex sentences with independent and dependent clauses.

Our focus for word work this last fortnight has been based around the morpheme 'tract' which means to 'pull'. For example in the word tractor or contraction.

Preview for Learning:

Students will continue to plan and draft their persuasive piece and revise conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions.

Maths

We have completed our place value unit and will continue to review these concepts in our Daily Review sessions. We have started our addition and subtraction unit, where students have revised strategies, such as the split strategy and vertical algorithm, to solve problems. In addition, we are continuing to focus on 24-hour time and learning how to convert it to 12-hour time.

Preview for Learning:

We are continuing on with our addition and subtraction unit with students continuing to focus on thier individual goals.

Naplan

NAPLAN has now been completed, and all students who missed an assessment have been caught up where possible. Our students did a wonderful job throughout the process, showing great persistence and dedication. Well done to everyone for your hard work and effort!
