Learning in Action

Literacy:

We are continuing to read the text ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ in literacy lessons. Students were very excited for Kensuke to finally reveal his own history and story of how he came to the island. This led to many fantastic conversations as a class about how Kensuke’s past had affected his attitude towards Michael when he first arrived on the island.

During writing sessions, students have continued to take notes about deforestation and its causes, effects, and possible solutions. Students completed an introductory paragraph for their persuasive essay entitled; “We must carefully protect our forests”. This year, students have been introduced to a new style of structuring a persuasive. Their introductory paragraph includes a General statement, Specific statement and a Thesis (GST). An example of this is shown below:

In Word Work sessions, students have begun to explore the morpheme ‘zo’. We discussed how ‘zo’ has Greek origins and means ‘life’.

Preview for Learning: Over the next fortnight we will finish reading Kensuke’s Kingdom, and students will finish their persuasive writing pieces.

Maths:

This week, students have been focusing on decomposing numbers in different ways, including working with numbers that contain internal zeros. They explored various strategies to break down numbers and deepen their understanding of place value. To reinforce these concepts, students have been playing engaging place value games such as Greedy Pig, Mastermind, and From Here to There, which help build number sense in a fun and interactive way.

You can practice these games at home with your child! We have placed a picture of what the games look like below and the students should be able to voice the instructions to you.

Master Mind                           From Here to There

In addition, we began an applied unit on mapping, where students learned about key map features such as scale, title, key/legend, and grid references. They put their learning into practice by examining different types of maps, including a Melway map, a world map, and a map of Victoria. This hands-on approach helped students develop their spatial awareness and navigation skills.

Preview for Learning: Over the next fortnight, we will continue to finish our applied Mapping unit where students will create their own maps.

Wellbeing:

In wellbeing we have continued to explore friendology and the friendometer. Students have identified what a healthy and an unhealthy friendship looks like and ways they can help their friendships stay in the green ‘healthy’ zone.
