Learning in Action

NAPLAN:

Over the last two weeks, students have completed their NAPLAN assessments. Students have concentrated and worked hard to complete these assessments to the best of their ability, and should be very proud of their efforts!

Literacy:

Over this fortnight, students have commenced their persuasive writing unit. They have looked at point of view, how a persuasive text is structured, and how to identify and write topic sentences with supporting details. Students have also discussed their opinions on different topics, whether they are ‘for’ or ‘against’ certain issues. They have reviewed the pros and cons of each side of an argument.

Students have begun to explore the impact that emotive language can have on their audience in a persuasive piece of writing.

Next fortnight, students will be completing their persuasive writing pieces, finishing their body paragraphs and writing a concluding paragraph to summarise their argument. We will also finish reading the novel ‘Matilda.’

**In celebration of the conclusion of our novel study, we are planning to watch the movie ‘Matilda’, on Wednesday 2 April, in the afternoon. Students are welcome to bring popcorn snacks and a cushion to sit on. Please be advised that the 1996 version of the movie is rated PG. Should you wish your child to opt out of watching it, please email your child’s class teacher.

Maths:

This fortnight, students have focused on turning their collected data into a column graph. Students have focused on their accuracy when drawing their graphs, and have ensured that their graphs are correctly labelled with the following information; title, x-axis and y-axis headings.

Students have continued to explore decomposing numbers, separating them into their place value. They have used MAB to represent different numbers and renamed the numbers into different place value sections.

Students will revise all of the concepts taught to them over the term, and complete and interpret their graphs.

Knowledge Rich:

During Knowledge Rich lessons this fortnight, students have explored the impact of food on their bodies. They have discussed the digestive system and how food moves through the body. They have also explored different types of food, and created their own brainstorms of ‘healthy’ and ‘sometimes’ foods.

Students have then started to put all of their knowledge together to think about all the elements of being healthy that we have explored this term. They have begun to create posters showing the different ways that we can be healthy.

Preview

Students will continue to work on their healthy me posters, including as many different elements of being healthy as possible.

 Wellbeing:

Students have revised the definition of ‘friendship fires’ this fortnight, and focused on identifying when an issue is a friendship fire vs when it is being mean on purpose. Students have discussed steps that they can take to help resolve conflicts, and explored how to move forward in a friendship.

Students have also looked at the idea of ‘mean on purpose’ behaviour, identifying behaviours that are cruel, mean or rude and designed to hurt someone. They have then practiced some ‘quick comeback’ phrases designed to remove themselves from unwanted behaviour from others.

Preview

Next fortnight, students will explore some tricky situations where it is not always clear if it is a friendship fire or mean on purpose. Students will also look at how to deal with being caught in the middle of other people’s issues and the idea of “stealing” friends.

Students will end the term by reviewing and reflecting on the friendship skills we have looked at this term, and how kindness and strength can help protect our mental health and wellbeing.

If you have any questions or would like to arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via Compass at any point during the year.

Have a wonderful weekend,
