Learning in action

Literacy

Over the past fortnight, during our Literature units we have continued increasing our vocabulary, whilst learning about the narrative hill. We have also been focusing on making connections, both text to self and text to text. For instance, students made comparisons between the main character in ‘Remarkable Remy,’ and ‘A friend called Simon,’ noting similarities and differences between the two.

This week we have loved reading the book ‘Littlelight,’ looking at different cultures and how we can learn from different people and their cultures. It was great to see all the different places our students came from, linking to the compass points to further our learning.

In Sentence Level writing, the students enjoyed applying their new understanding of sentence structure, and have been using pictures to come up with a subject, adjective, verb and adverbs, then using these to construct sentences.

In the last few weeks of term the Grade 2 students will be looking at the texts 'When you go to Melbourne' and 'Mallee Sky' in our literature units. We will be introducing and exploring the sentence stems - 'because', 'but' and 'so', in our sentence level writing sessions.

Wordwork:

Maths:

Our Math’s lessons have remained focused on our whole number place value unit. The students have continued to develop their understanding of zero as a place holder and can explain what happens if the zero doesn’t hold its place. For example, the number 308 becomes 38 if the zero is left out.  We have also been working on learning to identify and continue patterns when skip counting by 1s, 10s and 100s starting at any point (e.g., 22, 23, 42, 52… 243, 343, 443, 543… etc.). The student’s have also learnt to compare numbers using the less than (<) and greater than (>) symbols.

In our applied lessons we have further explored data and learnt how to create bar graphs to represent the data that the students collected in previous lessons. The students also engaged in our problem solving lesson, where they created their own robot monsters by using different robot puzzle pieces to create various combinations, finding out the different heights they could make. They asked themselves questions such as what is the shortest or longest robot I can make with the pieces.

In the last few weeks of term the students will continue to solidify their understanding of place value and the correct position of digits, through explicit teaching and games. The students will also complete the essential assessment post test.

Knowledge Rich:

Last week our Grade 2 students started their rotation activities for our unit topic looking at personal health. Each class has had the opportunity to be taught by each of the Grade 2 teachers in different topic areas. Miss D has focused on physical health, where students have enjoyed moving their bodies and learning what it means to be active. Mrs Bailey has focused on healthy eating and what foods and drinks are an everyday food vs a sometimes food. Students also looked at the healthy eating pyramid and created our own. Miss Harvey has focused on mental health and how students can keep themselves mentally healthy by completing a positive self talk activity.

The Grade 2’s are excited to show families their work in our open afternoon in the last week of term. Please see the date on our important information page.

Over the next week we will complete our final activity that reflects our understanding of health and how to focus on this in the three topic areas.

Wellbeing:

The Grade 2’s have been looking at the friend-o-meter and the friend-o-cycle in Friendology. Students’ have had the opportunity to practise ‘talk it outs’ in the classroom which is an important component when involved in a friendship fire. We encourage all students to have a go at talking to their friends when they have a friendship fire and make sure they are both ready, calm and ready to listen so they can get back into the green zone.

Over the next couple of weeks we will look at tricky situations and how to be kind and strong.

Curious corner is always a hit. We are loving how the students are always so happy, engaged and display kindness when in the curious corner.
