Learning in Action

Literacy

Over the past two weeks, students have been busy within the Literacy space.

Word Work

Students have been learning how to read and spell words and sentences that have the ‘ai’ and ‘ay’ digraphs. We learnt the rule that ‘ai’ goes at the beginning or middle of a word and that ‘ay’ always goes at the end. Some word examples include

  • Play
  • Say
  • Train
  • Plain

Students have been working hard to isolate each sound verbally, and transfer this sound knowledge to their spelling and writing.

Sentence Level Writing

Students have been learning to expand simple sentences by upgrading the who, including an adverbial when and adverbial where. An example of ‘upgrading the who’ would be instead of writing ‘It jumps’ we could upgrade the who to ‘The puppy jumps’. We also practiced including an adverbial when and where.

For example

It jumped.

The puppy jumped on the sand in the morning.

Handwriting

Students have been practising the lowercase version of the following letters:

a, c, d, e, g
o, q, s, k, v

Literature

Students have been learning about different families. Through reading two different picture story books;  ‘What Do You Call Your Grandma’ and ‘Love Makes a Family’, students reflected on their own special people in their lives and their own families. We learnt that families can look different, enjoy different activities and we considered how different families show love to each other.

Preview of learning:

Word Work

Grade 1's will be learning about the ‘ee’ and ‘ea’ digraphs.

Sentence Level Writing

Students will be learning to use conjunctions because and but in sentences.

Handwriting

Grade 1's will be working on the correct formation of the lowercase version of the following letters:

a, c, d, e, g
o, q, s, k, v

Literature

Students will continue to explore the concept of ‘Different Families’ through two new texts.

Numeracy

In Grade 1, we have been learning that the position of a number represents its value and that if you put numbers in a different order the number and value of this number completely changes. We have also explored making 2 digit numbers using concrete materials in multiple ways exploring how we can manipulate and change the tens and ones within a number. For example the number 24 can be represented as 24 ones and can also be represented as 2 tens and 4 ones.

Our students have been consolidating their place value knowledge by engaging in games that involve identifying and counting different representations of 2 digit numbers. Our mathematicians have been working really hard on the concept of tens and ones and knowing that each time we have ten ones, another ten is made. While engaging in place value games, students have also been working one on one with their teacher to identify what their goal will be when we begin our next unit of learning which will be Addition.

When learning about Data, students have chosen a question that they would like to pose to their peers and have begun collecting data by asking others their question and recording this information using tally marks.

Preview for learning:

In Week 9 and 10 students will continue to practise their whole number goals in order to strengthen their understanding of the concepts we have worked on during Term 1.

Inquiry

Students have continued their learning about what makes a healthy person. They have revised their understanding of the following dimensions of health:

Nutrition: Different types of healthy foods - grains, protein, fruit, vegetables, dairy. Students drew their own healthy dinner plate to capture their learning.

Mental Health: Students explored the different emotions they experience, and associated them with colours. They then completed a colouring activity where they used the colours that represented their current emotions. This communicated the idea that we can often experience multiple emotions at the same time.

Physical Health: Students practiced stretching their bodies to warm up for physical activity. They then chose a physical activity to engage in as a class.

Preview of learning: Over the next two weeks, students will set up their classrooms ready to show off how to be a healthy person at Celebration Afternoon.

Wellbeing

Learning in Action

Students have been applying their understanding of the four friendship facts:

  1. No friendship (or relationship is perfect)
  2. Friendships change... and that's ok!
  3. All friendships are different
  4. Trust and respect are the most important qualities of a friendship

They have been learning that Friendship Fires (small arguments between friends) are a normal part of friendships. They have been learning how to make Friendship Fires smaller by talking it out.

Additionally, students have been learning about how to deal with Tricky Situations in their friendships.

Preview of learning: Over the next fortnight, students will be learning how to be kind and strong.
