Understanding MHIPS at Sacred Heart
At our school, student wellbeing is a priority, and one of the ways we support this is through the Mental Health in Primary Schools initiative. Last week, Cathy and I had the opportunity to attend two professional learning days, where we further strengthened our current practices and reflected on our next steps in continuing to support student wellbeing across our school.
MHiPS is a Victorian Government program designed to strengthen mental health support in primary schools. It provides access to a dedicated Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader, who works across the school to build staff capacity, support students, and embed a strong, proactive approach to wellbeing.
What does MHiPS look like in our school?
Through MHiPS, we are able to:
- Support teachers to confidently respond to students’ social and emotional needs
- Implement whole-school wellbeing programs and initiatives
- Use data to identify students who may need additional support
- Provide targeted interventions for students requiring extra help
- Strengthen connections between school, home, and external support services
Importantly, MHiPS is a proactive, whole-school approach. It is not a counselling service or individual therapy, but rather a way of strengthening the systems, structures, and supports we already have in place to ensure all students feel safe, connected, and ready to learn.
Why is this important?
We know that when students feel safe, connected, and supported, they are more able to engage in learning and thrive at school. MHIPS helps us move beyond a reactive approach, allowing us to proactively build resilience, emotional regulation, and positive relationships in all students.
Working together
Supporting student wellbeing is a shared responsibility. MHIPS allows us to partner more closely with families and ensure that every child feels known, valued, and supported within our school community.
HARMONY DAY! Thank you to our wonderful Year 6 Leaders who helped run our Harmony Day activities and wellbeing afternoon!!
Today, our school came together to celebrate Harmony Day, a special event that highlights the importance of inclusivity, respect, and belonging for everyone. Students and staff embraced the spirit of the day by wearing a touch of orange or clothing that represents heritage and culture and participating in activities that encouraged understanding and appreciation of different cultures. From music, sport and dance to art and storytelling, it was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our Sacred Heart Community.
