Year 5

LITERACY

Our Y 5 students have recently completed both their persuasive writing pieces and our class novel study of War Horse. Throughout this unit, students explored the important question of whether horses should or should not have been used during the war.

They worked diligently to construct thoughtful arguments, using descriptive language and strong modality words to persuade their readers.

It was wonderful to see the students applying persuasive techniques so effectively while also demonstrating empathy and understanding of the historical context. We are very proud of the effort and creativity they showed in their writing.

MATHS

In Maths, we have been building our understanding of multiplication and division through a range of problem-solving activities. Students have been practising how to multiply by two-digit numbers using a written algorithm and exploring how factors can help solve division problems more efficiently. We have also been learning how to divide using a written algorithm.

Throughout these lessons, students have been applying the inverse relationship between multiplication and division to check their work and deepen their understanding.

TOPIC

We have started our second topic for Term One, exploring animal adaptations.

Students began by discussing the animal adaptations they already know and sharing examples of how different animals survive in their environments. We also looked at humans and the importance of our thumbs, discussing how humans have adapted over time to survive and thrive in different environments.

NAPLAN

We are very proud of how much the Grade 5s applied themselves during the NAPLAN assessments. Students completed Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy.

It's safe to say our Grade 5 students are happy to see the end of NAPLAN for a few more years.

Camp Rumbug

23rd-25th of March

Students have been sent home with a packing list and their camp schedule. Please remember to label all of your childs belongings and pack clothes that may not come back looking the same.

Year 6

Literacy

In Writing, students continue to develop and refine their sentence structure so they can craft the strongest sentences possible. They are focusing on incorporating adjectives, descriptive language, and Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary to make their writing more engaging and precise.

Our Year 6 students have been extending this work by exploring independent and dependent clauses, learning how to combine ideas to create compound and complex sentences. As part of this, they have been completing tasks that focus on constructing sentences using the conjunctions “because”, “but”, and “so” to clearly link their ideas and strengthen their writing.

Maths

In Maths, students have been exploring numerical expressions and learning how different combinations of numbers and operations can produce the same result. Through activities such as Expression Explorers, students investigated equivalent expressions and developed their reasoning skills by explaining how and why different calculations can be equal.

Students have also been learning to apply the order of operations when solving problems. They practised using calculators and spreadsheets to check and organise their calculations, helping them understand the importance of completing operations in the correct order. These skills were then applied to a range of worded problems, encouraging students to think carefully about the steps needed to reach a solution.

Topic

In Topic, students have been exploring the changing roles and rights of women throughout the 20th century. They have investigated how women’s opportunities and responsibilities in society evolved over time, particularly during key moments of social and political change.

Students have also examined significant events in the women’s rights movement and discussed how these moments helped shape greater equality and opportunity. As part of this learning, they have analysed the contributions of important individuals who advocated for women’s rights and worked to bring about change.
