Middle School News

Celebrations in Middle School
The Middle School has been a hive of activity at Sacred Heart. It has been wonderful to see how positively the students have settled into their new classrooms and routines. We are incredibly proud of the way they have embraced the year so far with enthusiasm, responsibility, and a willingness to learn.
School Athletics
Our middle school students demonstrated fantastic determination and sportsmanship throughout the day. It was wonderful to see them encouraging their peers, challenging themselves in each event, and showing such positive team spirit. Events like these are a great reminder of the strong sense of community we have at Sacred Heart and the pride our students take in representing their school.
We would like to extend a big thank you to the families who generously gave their time to support our Athletics Day last Friday.
School Swimmining
We are extreamly proud of our Year 3 and 4 students who represented Sacred Heart in Dendy Swimming, well done to:
Isla, Kate, Isabelle, Abi, Zara, Lucy, Ellira, Ella, Lilliah, Raffy and Ivan.
Run Club
Friday mornings are full of energy at Sacred Heart, and we are extremely proud of our Year 3 and 4 students who come along to Run Club each week. It’s a wonderful way to start the day, getting active, enjoying a run, and spending time with friends.
Year 3
English
In Literacy, we have been continuing to read and explore the novel Matilda. Some of us can really relate to the clever and resourceful character that is Matilda. We have written a narrative titled “Mischief is the Key to My Success,” creating wonderful stories about characters who have a problem and use pranks to get even with their nemesis. We have had great laughs at our own inventiveness!
We have now moved on to persuasive texts and will soon begin discussing the topic of corporal punishment to better understand the school life Matilda experienced under the dreaded Miss Trunchbull.
Maths
In Maths, over the past two weeks we have been looking at clocks, both analogue and digital, and calculating elapsed time. This is also the focus of our latest homework sheet, so we hope what was covered in class has stuck!
We have now moved on to learning about multiplication and division, and exploring inverse operations and how they help us expand our facts and strengthen our problem-solving skills.
Topic
In Topic, we have been investigating solids and liquids and discussed whether we thought rice was a liquid or a solid. It does pour, but the particles — the grains of rice — are still solid. We also discussed flour, which is also a solid even though the particles are very tiny.
Religion
In Religion, we have discussed how we can perform acts of kindness and created a wonderful display of Lenten acts. Please come and see our display if you are visiting the school. We hope to deepen this understanding by learning about the Stations of the Cross, so we also have a better understanding when the Year 6s present their Stations at the end of term.
NAPLAN
Thank you to our parents for supporting us during NAPLAN. Having early nights and nutritious food has helped us settle and approach this time with a positive mindset.
Year 4
English
In Literacy, students have been exploring the morpheme “cred,” meaning “to believe,” as part of our morphology studies, helping them better understand how word parts contribute to meaning. We have also begun studying the novel Storm Boy, where students are engaging with the text and developing their comprehension and discussion skills. At the sentence level, students continue to practise strengthening their writing by constructing clear and detailed sentences. They have also been applying these skills to an information report, using factual language and structured paragraphs to communicate their viewpoints clearly.
Maths
Our Grade 4 students have loved using PR1ME this year for Mathematics. They have been exploring worded problems and focusing on using mental strategies to subtract numbers efficiently. Students have been practising techniques such as near doubles and the compensation strategy, building their confidence and flexibility when solving calculations in their heads.
Topic
In Topic, students have been exploring the main types of vegetation in Australia and North America. They have been identifying the different plant communities and discussing simple similarities and differences between the two continents’ vegetation. Students have also been considering how people can care for different environments in a sustainable way, learning about practices that protect natural habitats and support the health of ecosystems for the future.
Religion
In Religion, we have been learning about the story of Daniel in the Lions’ Den and exploring how it teaches us about faith, courage, and trusting God in difficult times. We have been exploring Lent and understanding the events and significance of Holy Week.
Welcome Della
Della has joined the Sacred Heart community this year as a valued member of our team. As a past student, it has been wonderful to welcome her back, and she has quickly become a fantastic support in our school. Della often works with 4B, where she does an outstanding job as a Learning Support Officer, supporting students with care and dedication.
Term 2 Novel Studies
In Term 2, Year 4 students will be exploring the novel Uncle Xbox by Jared Thomas as part of their novel studies. To support a smooth transition into the text, your child may like to read the novel over the holidays and begin to familiarise themselves with the story.
