In our mathematics lessons, students begin each day with a short daily review. This is a quick, teacher led routine where students revisit important ideas they have already learned. The goal is to strengthen memory, build fluency, and support confident problem solving.
Daily reviews are short and focused. In most classes they take between five and ten minutes, and no more than twenty minutes. This allows students to revisit previous learning while still leaving plenty of time to learn new content.
During the review, students practise a variety of previously taught skills and concepts. These questions might include number facts, place value, calculation strategies, vocabulary or previously taught problem types. Students recall knowledge, apply strategies, and explain their thinking.
You might hear your child say that maths feels repetitive or that they are practising things they have already learned.
This is intentional.
Repetition with purpose strengthens memory. Each time students recall information, it becomes easier and faster to remember the next time.
This process helps students develop fluency. Fluency means students can recall facts and use strategies quickly and accurately. When basic knowledge becomes automatic, students can focus their thinking on understanding new ideas and solving more complex problems.
Daily review is also highly interactive. Students often respond using mini whiteboards, explain their thinking, or discuss answers with a partner. This keeps all students engaged and allows teachers to check understanding across the whole class.
Daily review also gives teachers important information. It shows what students remember and where further practice is needed. If a concept appears difficult, teachers can address it quickly or reteach it in future lessons to strengthen understanding.
Through this routine, students strengthen their knowledge, build confidence, and develop the fluency and automaticity needed for success in mathematics.
