Celebrating Science Week in Year 4
Earth Science
In year 4, term 3 has been all about exploring earth sciences. We started with an incursion and have conducted a soil survey collecting samples from across different areas of the school and analysing them to look for differences in composition. This week is Science Week and we have researched different rock types, finding three categories: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. We learned about the etymology of the words, igneous coming from the Latin word for fire, sedimentary meaning to sit or settle, and metamorphic sounding familiar as we linked back to our biological sciences unit on life cycles of butterflies and frogs. We had a ride along the rock cycle to find out that there are many different journeys rocks can take (almost like snakes and ladders). Then we jumped into investigations about weathering, erosion & deposition. It really is incredible how much is going on beneath our feet and around us in nature!
Here are some photos and posters from our research!
