School Musical

Get those butterflies into formation - Here we come! Only 3 weeks to go

The students and teachers have been all working tirelessly to present you with an energetic, fun-filled performance. Classes have been performing to each other and every Friday two classes have performed for the school. Of course, there is nervousness and a bit of reluctance at first but those who put themselves out there are rarely disappointed. In fact, they find that they have fun on stage doing something unique with their friends and afterwards they feel a huge sense of accomplishment in what they have been able to pull off. Every one of them just wants to do it again!!!

On a performance evening some kids need to be coaxed into stage a bit more than others. At school, we chat about - getting those butterflies into formation and replacing ‘I’m nervous’ with ‘I’m determined’, after all, we may also get butterflies when we are excited - the same butterflies. We just need to change the story we tell our brain - from:

‘I’m so nervous I can’t do it’  to

‘I’m so excited, I am determined to do it’!

If your child is nervous at this stage maybe you can use some of this language at home. After All schooling works best when we are partnering with each other and reinforcing things.

I have no doubt that once out on stage, in front of all those beaming faces or support, your kids are gonna love it!

So, are you ready to command your butterflies?

  • Recognize Them: Don't shy away from acknowledging your apprehension. Embrace it - it's your body’s way of telling you that you're about to do something great.  Lean into the uncomfortable!
  • Change Your Perspective: Look at your butterflies as a sign of excitement, not failure. Remember, the bigger the challenge, the sweeter the victory.  Ask yourself, what is the bigger picture of why I am doing "the thing"?
  • Do Your Homework: The better prepared you are, the easier it will be to transform your nervous energy. Preparation goes beyond just knowing your stuff. It's about understanding your audience, anticipating potential questions, and rehearsing your delivery. It's about being so well-versed in your subject matter that even if you're thrown a curveball, you can handle it with grace and poise. Once rehearsed, your authenticity has permission to step forward….. Confidence is born out of preparation!
  • Just Breathe: Deep, controlled breathing can help calm your nerves and give you a sense of control and will align your butterflies to fly in formation. Try the 4-7-8 breathing technique…google it!
  • Mindset Mastery: Understand that everyone, from top CEOs to successful entrepreneurs and beyond, all experience butterflies. It's truly how you interpret them that makes all the difference. View them as a source of energy and motivation rather than anxiety. Turn your pressure into power!
  • Picture Your Triumph: Visualize yourself succeeding. This simple act can help reduce anxiety and boost your confidence.
