What a fun few weeks we have had with some exciting visitors!

We had our own "Rock" Olympics! Where students decorated their own athlete (rock), which they then got to participate in 3 different events:

Diving - where they dropped their athlete into a tub of water and we recorded the biggest splash.

Bob sleighing - where they pushed their athlete down the slide/ ramp and we recorded the longest length.

Break dancing - where they spun their athlete on the top of the table and we recorded the longest spinning time.

At the end of the week we had our own medal ceremony where we celebrated our 1st, 2nd and 3rd for each learning group for all the events. Congratulations to our winners! The students had an absolute blast.

We have been learning about people that work and are part of our local community. On Monday we had Peter Sneddon, who came and spoke to the Preps about his job as a scaffolder. He showed them all the tools and safety equipment he uses to ensure he stays safe at his worksite and can complete the work he needs to do. Thank you Peter!

We also had the Wyndham Vale CFA come out and visit us. They had the opportunity to learn all about the CFA, what to do if there is a fire and what number to call if they need help. The Preps got to practice using the hose and learned all the equipment required to fulfil their job. They also learned what to do if there is a fire in their house, a safe meeting point and how to get down low and go,go,go! It was a fun, interactive experience and we thank Maria Lewis for helping make this happen.

We look forward to having more parents from the community come and talk to the Preps about their important jobs, what they do, what they wear, where they work and how they play a vital role in the community.

On Thursday, we celebrated book week ‘Reading is Magic’. The students came dressed up and it was great to see the creativity and excitement on the preps faces as they came and shared in this exciting day, dedicated to reading. Over the next 2 weeks students will be participating in book week activities where they will be looking at texts which have been shortlisted for 2024.

BOOK WEEK

Some of our students had a little scare as they were greeted by our zombie crew on Thursday morning. The 5/6 team were inspired by Adam Wallace's 'Zombie Inspiration'.

Our students certainly got into the spirit of the day, coming in some amazingly creative costumes for the Book Week parade.

GIRL'S FOOTBALL TEAM

On Tuesday the 13th of August, our Girls 9-a-side AFL team competed in the divisional day, where they competed against other schools from the Werribee, Wyndham and Hoppers Crossing areas. The girls had a wonderful day and won one of their games and were very competitive in all of their other games. A massive thanks to Janeen and Hayley for their help on the day.

YEAR 5/6 DRAWING COMPETITION

This term, Celeste and Scarlett our senior Arts Leaders organised a drawing competition for any interested 5/6 students. They could draw any character of their choosing and place them into a background of their choice. Students had the choice of creating a hand-drawn piece or one made using digital technologies. Our staff voted for their favourites and today we announced the winners. Congratulations to:

SPELLING BEE

On Friday, the 5/6 students had the opportunity to participate in a Spelling Bee organised by Sandy and the SRC. We had many students choose to join in, which was pleasing to see. After many rounds and progressively harder words to spell, Rohan S was crowned the winner.

This week we celebrated BOOK WEEK! The Grade 1/2s have spent the last 2 weeks exploring the 2024 CBCA Book Of The Year Award Nominations.

Here are some of the awesome books nominated this year…

This week we read ‘That Bird Had Arms!’ by Kate Temple and Jol Temple. We looked at what it means to be unique and how to celebrate our differences. The students got to be creative and create animals with unique traits… Check them out!

On Thursday the 22nd of August we had our Book Parade! It was so great to see so many kids get into the spirit of the day. Congratulations to Harper, Franco and Boston who won best dressed! Check out some of our amazing costumes from students AND staff. “I spy with my little eye… a flying pigeon, a Spiderman or 3, an astronaut and a Where’s Wally?”

In Maths this week we have been focusing on Multiplication. The Grade 1/2s have been lucky enough to work with different 1/2 Teachers in both LC1 and LC3 to work on a range of Multiplication skills. From skip counting to doubling and sharing to halving. We have really enjoyed learning with our friends from other classes. Have a look at the amazing work we have accomplished this week.

In Inquiry, we have continued to look into Community and what Community means. In Week 5, we focussed on our OWN community by looking at where we live, who is in our family community and our community helpers. In Week 6, we looked at the Wyndham Community and revisited some of the places we visited on our Excursion.

In Religion, we have celebrated Mary the Mother of God and how her characteristics are reflected in the women in our own lives.

Book week activities:

During Week 5 and 6 we have started exploring books on this year's Book Week list. The theme for 2024 was Reading Is Magic and we have had a lot of fun exploring the world through books. Students have been able to participate in different activities such as: creative tasks, creating and writing stories with inspiration from the texts and much more.

Maths - Mapping:

In numeracy we have been learning about location. Our students have been learning to interpret and create maps of familiar places. They have been using directional language and grid references to describe the location of landmarks and plan routes to nearby places. Our students have enjoyed developing their understanding of the local environment through maps.

Maths - Money:

This week, students that were not on camp have also started learning about money. They have been learning to recognise the value of Australian notes and coins and use calculations to determine cost and change in various situations. Our students have enjoyed working with money this week and the other half of our students will be participating in these lessons next week.

Book week parade:

Yesterday was our wonderful book parade, where so many of the students dressed in their most creative and inspiring costumes. It was wonderful to see their excited face and their love of reading show on their faces.

Camp:

This week 3/4 Red, 3/4 Yellow, and 3/4 Green all attended Urban Camp, where we were lucky enough to explore many wonderful Melbourne landmarks. Our first stop was the Shrine of Remembrance. We explored some of the downstairs galleries, learnt about the history of the Shrine, saw first hand one of the Gallipoli landing boats and the students got to play with some of the items the soldiers wore or used during World War 1. The students also went up to the crypt and learnt about how the position of the sun falls directly over Love on 11th of November at 11 o’clock. From the Shrine we all walked to the MCG, where the students saw the Yarra River and the gardens.

At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the students went on a tour of the MCC, going down to the ground and exploring some of the players rooms, such as: the ice baths and medical room, media room and meeting room. As part of the tour, the students were able to learn about the history of the MCG. After our tour, we then all had a chance to explore the National Sports Museum and Game on. The students loved the interactive nature where they could play and explore the different sporting areas.

Then we were off again this time catching a train to the Urban Camp. Once the students arrived they had a little down time before we all enjoyed a lovely dinner and then we were off on our next adventure. This time we were off to the Eureka SkyDeck and taking in a birds eye view of Melbourne. The students and staff were able to spot many of the Landmarks we had been to during the day as well as some of the landmarks we had explored in class. Then it was time to head back to camp and sleep.

It was an early morning on Tuesday where the students and staff enjoyed a lovely breakfast before heading to the train and the Old Melbourne Gaol. At the Goal, the students listened and learnt about its rich history and about what life was like for the prisoners. The students were also told about the story of Ned Kelly and his link to the Goal. The students had a short time to look around the Goal and some of the cells. Then it was time to have some lunch in the square outside the Goal and then head back to school.

Camp #2

We are very excited second 3/4 camp next week. The final preparations are under way. Please find attached here a copy of the parent info presentation to refer to. Within the presentation there is also a handy 'What to pack' list. Remember, if you have any questions about camp, do not hesitate to contact either your child's teacher, John or Bec.
