Problem solving at Skye

At Skye Primary school, we use a balanced approach to teaching math. Across a fortnight we spend 70% of our time on Explicit Direct Instruction, which helps build a strong foundation in numeracy skills. The remaining 30% is focused on problem-solving, where students tackle real-world math problems. This approach lets them apply what they've learned and work together to explore different solutions, in doing so students are able to build their fluency, understanding, reasoning and problem-solving capabilities.

You can support your child's learning at home by incorporating math into everyday activities. For example, involve them in shopping and budgeting, keep track of sports scores, or time events. These activities help reinforce the math skills they are learning at school.
