Connect: Year 6
Term Three 2024 - 6A, 6B & 5/6C
Dear Families,
Even with our busy schedules, students celebrated Book Week by dressing up as their favourite character, working with the preps on a special activity and participating in the many activities the library had to offer. We also had a visit from Professor Bunsen who wowed the students with his amazing experiments and scientific knowledge. Concert practise is underway with dance routines, stage positioning and singing skills all being refined in preparation for the big day/night.

Upcoming Learning
Literacy
We have finally finished our mentor text Runt. This text has provided students with an example of high-quality writing, offering inspiration and insight into the structure, style and language use of the author. By analysing and discussing this text students have developed a greater appreciation of the craft of writing and can improve their own skills. Comprehension strategies such as connecting, summarising and questioning will continue to be a focus as we begin our new mentor text Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.
In the coming weeks students will be explicitly taught to write explanation texts. An explanation text is a type of writing that clarifies how something works or why something happens. It provides detailed information about processes, events, or concepts, helping readers understand complex ideas by breaking them down into simpler steps or parts. These texts often use clear and logical language, including features like cause-and-effect relationships, sequential order, and diagrams or illustrations to make the explanation more accessible. Explanation texts are commonly used in educational contexts to teach or inform, guiding readers through a topic in a way that's easy to follow and understand. We look forward to students creating their own explanation text on a topic of interest.
Numeracy
In the coming weeks students will continue to collect and represent data in various ways including pie charts, line graphs, and double column graphs. Data representation involves organizing and visualising data in ways that make it easier to analyse, communicate, and make informed decisions. We will also begin using the order of operations to solve equations, a skill that is essential for solving equations accurately using a consistent and logical sequence.
Wellbeing
Our wellbeing focus continues to be gender norms and involves exploring the roles and behaviours that society traditionally associates with being male and female. It is crucial to foster an understanding of these concepts in a way that promotes equality, respect and self-expression.
