Connect: Year 1

It has been a tough two weeks for lots of families as Influenza A and B have been doing the rounds, with almost half the students affected. Some days we have had very low numbers. Thank you for keeping us informed with why your child is not at school.

LITERACY

Our phonics focus this week has been 'oo' 'oops'. Students have been also learning about adjectives and using these to describe characters. This will help them when we move into writing stories over the last weeks of this term.

The Little Learners books have been well received with most students saying they are reading them lots of times over the week. Repeated reading helps the words to become automatic and locked into their long term memory. Thanks for returning them each week. Let your teacher know if you haven't had a new book in a while.

NUMERACY

Students have been expanding their place value knowledge and vocabulary this week. Using digits, place value columns, tens, ones and even hundreds students have engaged in opportunities to share their understanding of whole numbers. Making a 120 chart was a highlight for many, who were thrilled to show off their learning. Over the coming week, we are exploring capacity, length and weight of objects. Estimating is a key skill for students and there will be plenty of hands-on activities full of estimating, comparing and checking measurements. At home playing 'Race to 120', snakes and ladders, or other board games with numbers, is a fun way to revisit this week's learning.

INQUIRY

Our focus is on Chemical Science seeing students looking at different materials that change shape. This week we looked at how we can change the shape of play-doh. The students used, 'bending, stretching, twisting, rolling and moulding' to recreate an object. They had lots of fun.

WELLBEING

We are continuing to focus on different strategies to help us stay calm when we are faced with things that may have us feeling frustrated, upset or angry. Children are learning these important social skills inside and outside of the classroom.

Professor Bunsen

Strong Hearts Cats Fundraising

After adopting his two cats from Strong Hearts Cats, Fletcher has been very passionate about helping other animals in need. Coming up with the idea to sell cupcakes to raise money he talked to his parents and teacher to make it a reality. Fletcher raised $270 for this worthy cause! WOW! Thank you to everyone in Grade One who supported this cause.
