Year 8 Medieval Day
As part of their History studies and in particular their unit on Medieval Europe, Year 8 students participated in Medieval History Day at our Bentleigh East Campus. The focus of this experience was to provide an interactive learning opportunity to understand social, economic, political and cultural achievements and changes that were occurring during Medieval Europe.
Students participated in sessions around Weapons and Armour, Troubadours, Crime and Punishment, as well as Archery. This culminated in a Tournament where students had the opportunity to learn how to fight like a mediaeval knight!
Highlights for our students included the archery, dancing, armoury and the tournament.
“My favourite part of Medieval Day was the tournament, because I got to see the effectiveness of a shield and sword.”
“My favourite was being able to experience and understand what things were like in Medieval times.”
“My favourite was the weapons and armour, because I got to get involved and wear the costumes.”
“Learning about the weapons, Armor and fighting strategies that people used was interesting.”
“The weapons and armoury were my favourit because it was cool to see how it all evolved throughout the years.”
“I liked doing the tournament because you got to use different weapons and duel people.”
VCE Politics Excursion
The Unit 1/2 Politics students have been discussing various national and global issues this year, including COVID-19, the Black Summer Bushfires, Human Rights in Australia and the Rohingya Genocide. They have had some lively debates surrounding the protection of human rights, including the case studies of a Voice to Parliament and raising the age of criminal responsibility.
Students learned about the ways that rights are protected in Australia through our democratic institutions and processes – including through the courts (common law) and parliament (statute law), as well as though the Constitution and International Laws.
To bring this learning to life, students visited the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court and Victorian Parliament on August 7. Here is a reflection from students Oliver K and Jack M.
"The excursion was great and accelerated our knowledge and understanding of how our political and legal systems run. Early in the morning, we arrived at Flagstaff Station and walked down William Street where the crest of the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court greeted us.
We proceeded to sit and observe criminal cases - from simple bail infringements and assault - to even being able to witness a murder trial being heard as a Committal Hearing before being passed to the Supreme Court across the street. What was remarkable was the opportunity to freely explore the Magistrates’ Court and witness the judicial process up close and speak to a Police Prosecutor about his role in court.
After an early lunch at Melbourne Central, we boarded a train and proceeded to the Victorian Parliament, where we were taught about the history of the building and each chamber – the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council.
We were briefed on our roles for a mock bill debate inside the Legislative Assembly and finished our day with a chat with Old Collegian, Brad Rowswell MP - current Shadow Treasurer and Member for Sandringham.
It was undeniably one of the best excursions we have ever attended!"
