Education in Faith

R.E. Learning in 5/6MB

The Year 6 students are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. The senior school students have been learning about what it means to be a “Spirit Filled Person.” As a person becomes more attuned and sensitive to the divine Spirit within them, that Spirit becomes more evident and is communicated to others.

We researched Saints and Spirit Filled People and reflected on the gifts of the spirit that they demonstrated in their lives. Here are some of the people we identified as demonstrating the Gifts of the Spirit.

St Nathanael demonstrated the gift of COURAGE. He demonstrated this gift by going to different countries that didn’t have Catholicism and therefore it was very dangerous. St Nathanael had the courage to do something brave, being strong and having the inner strength to face these challenges. He was also known to support other people. People looked to St Nathanael for help and guidance.

St Genevieve of Paris displayed the gift of COURAGE. When Attila the Hun tried to invade Paris,  St Genevieve persuaded the people to pray rather than flee the city. When the praying started the city was saved because of St Genevieve. She had the courage to do something brave, the courage to support and help other people.

                                                                                                                                       Alicia W

Another gift St Anthony showed was HOLINESS. St Anthony went out of his way to help and pray to God. He went to different places to show his true love, devotion and respect to God and how much he will do just to believe and worship God. St Anthony was a holy person and a person of faith and prayer.

                                                                                                                                          Art T

When Aaron McMillan was injured he did not give up. He changed his career and went to music. It was a setback when he had an injury but he showed COURAGE by not giving up.

                                                                                                                                          Ned K

Lauren Hichabaa displayed the gift of HOLINESS when she moved to Zambia to share the catholic religion with the people. The fact that Lauren wanted to share her religion all over the world makes her a person of faith and prayer.

                                                                                                                                       Xander C

Ursula Frayne demonstrates the gift of COURAGE by going to Melbourne and sailing across treacherous, dangerous waters just to help little kids and their catholic journey begin in Melbourne, Australia.  Having the gift of courage means not just doing something once and never doing it again but doing it all the time and I think Ursula did that a lot throughout her life. She has the courage to always do something brave and have inner strength.

                                                                                                                                          Mia C

St Ludmila displayed the gift of the ABILITY TO CHOOSE RIGHTLY. Ludmila displays this when she always made good decisions on what to do and always puts those decisions into real life. Ludmila also chose to get people to follow God.

                                                                                                                                       Hugo H

Miriam Rose Ungunmer showed the gift of KNOWLEDGE when she became the Territory's first fully qualified Aboriginal teacher. She was chosen to hold this name because of her commitment to ensuring Aboriginal peoples have an opportunity to become qualified teachers to manage their own schools. Miriam Rose Ungunmer was able to see information and facts and look at them objectively and intelligently.

                                                                                                                                       Anna H

Saint John the Evangelist demonstrated the gift of KNOWLEDGE. Saint John was able to look at Jesus’ life by standing beside him and being one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. As well as write his own version of the old testament otherwise known as the fourth gospel, demonstrating the teaching that Jesus taught.

                                                                                                                                     James N

Saint Patrick showed a great deal of HOLINESS when he  showed the clover in front of the crowd and claimed that it was a visualised sign of the cross. He was holy because he was willing to risk his life to proclaim the good news of God. And show the people how to become loyal to God and follow in God's footsteps.

                                                                                                                                     James G

Moira Kelly has shown UNDERSTANDING when she went to Iraq in 1998 and found two boys that lived in an orphanage. The two boys had limb shortage and they both needed a major surgery. After the surgery Moira Kelly decided that the two boys deserve a better life than to go back to Iraq and the orphanage so Moira Kelly later decided to adopt the two boys. When Moira Kelly adopted the boys she showed that she can understand from the boys' perspective.

                                                                                                                                        Kiara C

Margaret Oats showed UNDERSTANDING when she started a campaign about supporting struggling parents and children. She showed them how to communicate and make choices that put them in a better position in life. She showed them how to be and feel like they belong in their home, family and community. She has the ability to feel the feelings of others and to put these before our own.

                                                                                                                                        Kate M

Wisdom is to have experience, knowledge and good judgement. Saint Catherine of Siena displayed WISDOM when she would pray and reflect on things she had done, heard and seen. She had her own way of interpreting the world which shows how she has wisdom.

                                                                                                                                        Poppy T

Sunday Gospel

The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the Newsletter, you will find the Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

Returning from the district of Tyre, Jesus went by way of Sidon towards the sea of Galilee, right through the Decapolis region. And they brought him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they asked him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, put his fingers into the man’s ears and touched his tongue with spittle. Then looking up to heaven he sighed; and he said to him, ‘Ephphatha,’ that is, ‘Be opened.’ And his ears were opened, and the ligament of his tongue was loosened and he spoke clearly. And Jesus ordered them to tell no one about it, but the more he insisted, the more widely they published it. Their admiration was unbounded. ‘He has done all things well,’ they said ‘he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.’’

Discussion Questions

1. Who has been sick and had to stay at home from school?

2. Who looked after you?

3. What did they do to make you feel better?

4. In today’s gospel Jesus showed concern for someone who could not speak or hear. What did Jesus do?

5. Why did Jesus touch the man so that he could hear and speak?

6. Jesus showed how much he cared about people who were sick or in need. Who are the people in need that we should care about?

We pray that we will always be kind and care for people who are in need.
