Summer Sports Gala Day
On 16th of April students from North Melbourne Primary School participated in the Summer Sports Gala Day. The day was filled with fantastic moments of sportsmanship, teamwork, excellence and respect.
Soccer
Both boys and girls participated in three games across the day. Students showcased their skills such as agility, ball handling and different strategies to score, whilst maintaining their focus on the spirit of friendly competition. There were some extremely close results between schools which showed how strong and successful soccer is around schools in this area.
Cricket
Our budding cricketers played a variety of different short format games which focused on the three main facets of the game. When not running excitedly around the field, students were able to try their hand at both batting and bowling. In what were some hotly participated contests the NMPS cricketers soon realised the teamwork required to be able to run the correct amount between the wickets but also how to move the field to best restrict the opposition players. Everyone enjoyed their time and brought back some fantastic grass-stained whites to prove this!
Tennis
Hotshots students showcased their racquet finesse rallying back and forth with skill and touch. Serves and volleys were met with encouragement from teammates and spectators. Regardless of the outcome, every player exhibited calmness under pressure and the ability to be respectful and fair with their opponents and teammates.
Upon reflection we are reminded of the importance of sports in promoting not only physical health but other life skills such as teamwork, resilience, and leadership. Students thoroughly enjoyed the day and were able to represent NMPS with a fantastic attitude.
Shrine of Remembrance Student Leader Excursion
Harry & Lucas, Year 6E
The Anzac Day Shrine Of Remembrance was a beautiful sight filled with memories of those who served and sacrificed their lives for us so we can be where we are today. The school leaders and house captains of 2024 NMPS and teachers Ben and Kale got to commemorate those who fought and served in not only Australia but worldwide during World War One and Two. As we got to the shrine we sat down in our booked seats and were given a flag and an itinerary of what would happen during the service.
We sat down and were politely welcomed by two elders. Shortly after their warm welcome, the soldiers marched down the middle of the path representing those who fought for us. Eventually the choir sang many Australian songs. These included Waltzing Matilda, I’m Australian and most importantly the Australian National Anthem. After this it was announced that the governor would come to pay respects and view the brave soldiers that would serve the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). We had a moment of silence for us to pay our respects to the soldiers who either finished serving the army or people who still are. At that moment we heard the national anthem. However, the most exciting part was when school leaders Lola and Max placed down a flower wreath next to the eternal flame paying our school's respect. It ended with the governor departing and saying their final thanks.
After the commemoration we all got invited to explore the Shrine of Remembrance Museum. Our guide took us around and showed us the equipment the soldiers would use during both WW1, WW2 and current wars. The museum was filled with short films about past life and interactive activities that we spent more time on than we’d like to admit.
Finally we departed, getting on a tram (with a quick stop in the city to change what tram we were on) to get back to school, finishing our exciting excursion.
