Writing- Poetry
A poem is an idea that has been gift wrapped by its author. Even though the words may be simple, the author is able to communicate a lot about their ideas through poetic devices.
A poem does not have to be a particular length, use fancy words, rhyme or be boring, they just have to communicate an important idea through language in an artistic way.
Learning intention: To experiment with and apply specific poetry techniques to construct a poem for Mother’s Day
Learning experience overview:
- The students were exposed to a variety of poems during our writing sessions.
(Haiku- syllable focussed, Quatrain- Rhyme focussed, Cinquain- word focussed)
- We explored the subject matter and theme of poems, voice, rhythm, rhyme, sound patterns and use of language to support imagery.
- The students then chose two styles of poetry writing to experiment with.
The topic was ‘MUM’.
- They all started with a list of words or statements about their mums and then slowly started to experiment with word placement and structure.
- Once the student finalised their poem they had the opportunity to recreate it digitally on Canva.
