Learning Intention: We are learning about how adjectives are used to describe nouns.

6+1 Traits of Writing: Word choice.

Learning Experience Overview:

In our Writing Lessons we have been reviewing what an adjective is and brainstorming all the different adjectives we know. After our Big Idea Dress Up Day, students either draw a picture of themselves in costume or were given a photo of themselves. They then were given time to write as many adjectives as they could about their picture.

We do:

As a class, we explored what an adjective is and brainstormed all the different words that we could think of. We then focused on the adjectives that we could use to describe all the different costumes they wore, and the adjectives that could describe the career they would like to work in.

Prompts:

- What is an adjective you could use to describe what you wore?

- Colours can be used as adjectives, what are some colours you wore?

- What do you need to be, to do that kind of work? For example, a Zookeeper would need to be brave, and a basketball player would need to be athletic. What other words can you think of?

You do:

Students then brainstormed all the different words they could think of that described their costumes and the dress up day. Some used words from our class brainstorm, along with coming up with their own words too. They were able to use a picture they had draw of themselves or a photo to support them in their brainstorm.

We do:

Share and reflect – students shared with their peers the adjectives they used to describe their costumes and their pictures.

What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience:

- When reading stories, create a list of the adjectives that you and your child can find in the books.

- Encourage your child to come up with adjectives with drawing and pictures they create.

- Ask them to describe different objects or places you visit.
