Prep Bulletin

Learning Intention: We are learning to use what we know about sounds and the letters we use to represent them.

Background:

Books that have a familiar sequence are organised around a recognisable theme or concept, such as days of the week, numbers, the alphabet, seasons, opposites, etc.

Having students create their own familiar sequence books is a great way to teach concepts whilst building their writing fluency and imaginations.  In this learning experience, students create a book describing themselves using the letters from their name.

Learning Experience:

Whole Class

As a class we explore the mentor text ‘Once Upon an Alphabet’. We discussed the pattern in the book.

Then the teacher explained to the class that today students are going to write their very own ABC book and it’s going to be all about them. Students used the letters from their name to describe themself or things they liked that began with letters from their name.

Teacher models the steps to the class with their own name.

Small:

Students create their own ABC book using their name. They used their alphabet mats to help with their writing.

Whole:

Celebrate and Share Students read their ABC book to a peer.

  • Tell your partner which page you want to know more about.  You just say ‘Tell me More about that please.’
  • Tell your partner one thing you learnt about them that you didn’t know or found interesting.

Evaluate

Was it tricky or easy to find things about you that matched the letters of your name?

In this learning experience, students will work towards:

  • Noticing the authors word choice in a text
  • Noticing and using the structure from a text in their own writing
  • Identifying how many letters are in their name
  • Matching the initial sound to the letter
  • Identifying sounds at the start, middle and/or end of words

Examples of students work:

What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience:

  • Encourage your child to read their book to you
  • Encourage your child to make their own books at home
  • Notice patterns in books
