Curriculum Overview Term 2
Classroom reading includes whole class, guided, and individual reading with a focus on reading strategies and comprehension of a variety of fiction and non fiction texts.
Home reading should include regular sharing of stories, enjoying favourite picture books and incidental reading in order to promote a love of reading, learning and the development of good habits. As part of our InitiaLit approach to teaching Literacy, some children will be provided with letter tiles for extra practise at home of names and sounds of letters. Children will also receive a decodable book and Tricky word cards as they are taught, so that practise can continue at home, also. You will find that the decodable reader is at an easier level than what your child can read, which allows them to experience success and consolidate skills learnt at school. These books are designed to specifically reinforce the concepts we teach in the classroom.
We strongly encourage that you continue to read this reader each day for three days, along with any other reading material. Your child may like to listen to an adult or older sibling read, or attempt another book by themselves. Your child will also continue to borrow a book from the school library each week which is another great source for you to re-use before returning it the following week. Marking reading completed at home in your child's yellow reading diary lets your child's teacher know how often your child has been able to read or be read to, and the types of books they've been enjoying.
Please contact your child's teacher if you are experiencing any issues with this or have further questions.
