Heads of House

As Heads of House, we find that Term 2 can be a particularly testing time for our Year 12 cohort of students. This is likely because they have completed much of their internal assessment; they can see the finish line in the distance; yet much of the hard work of final assessments and examinations is still ahead of them; and they are tiring of the secondary school world. In addition to this, as many of them are hitting young adulthood they are feeling increasing levels of independence external to the schooling institution, but grappling with continuing boundaries they must exist within at school on a Monday to Friday basis. It is therefore crucial that we partner as educators and parents in providing high challenge and support at this important time.

To encourage our Year 12 students to continue to work hard at this pivotal time, here are some tips to help you encourage your child at this critical time:

  1. Open Communication: Create a safe space for your child to express their concerns and feelings about the challenges they may face. Listen actively and offer guidance without judgment.
  2. Set Realistic Goals: Help your child set achievable goals for their academic and personal growth. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks to maintain motivation and reduce feelings of overwhelm.
  3. Establish a Routine: Encourage your child to establish a daily routine that includes dedicated time for studying, relaxation, and hobbies. Consistency is key to maintaining focus and productivity.
  4. Provide Academic Support: Offer assistance with schoolwork when needed, but also encourage independence and problem-solving skills. Consider hiring a tutor or enrolling in study groups if additional support is required or suggest they use our on-site Academic Mentoring service.
  5. Promote Self-Care: Emphasize the importance of self-care activities such as exercise, adequate sleep, and healthy eating habits. Encourage breaks during study sessions to prevent burnout and maintain overall well-being.
  6. Celebrate Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate your child’s accomplishments, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement boosts confidence and motivation to continue striving for success.
  7. Manage Stress: Teach your child stress-management techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or journaling. Encourage them to prioritize self-care practices during times of high stress.
  8. Stay Positive: Maintain a positive attitude and outlook, even during challenging times. Remind your child that setbacks are a natural part of the learning process and an opportunity for growth.
  9. Offer Perspective: Help your child keep things in perspective by reminding them that their worth is not solely determined by academic performance. Encourage them to pursue their passions and interests outside of school.
  10. Seek Support: Reach out to teachers, counsellors, or other support services if you have concerns about your child’s well-being or academic progress. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey.

By following these tips and offering your unwavering support, you can help your Year 12 student navigate their final year of school with confidence and resilience.
