Principal's Report

Principal Report

Mortlake College has a long and proud history of being deeply connected to our local community. We recognise that when schools, families and the wider community work together, students benefit. Strong partnerships contribute to increased motivation, improved attendance, stronger learning outcomes and positive behaviours…all of which are essential to student growth, wellbeing and success.

As a rural P–12 College, these connections are especially important to us. Community involvement helps our students build positive relationships with one another, with staff and with the broader Mortlake community. These relationships support the development of confidence, belonging, friendships and social networks that enrich both academic learning and personal growth.

We are incredibly fortunate to have community members, families, organisations and volunteers who give their time, knowledge and support so generously to our College. Their involvement helps our students thrive and demonstrates the value of positive role models, mentoring and shared responsibility in raising and supporting young people. At Mortlake College, our community is one of our greatest strengths, and it plays a vital role in shaping the inclusive, connected and supportive environment we are proud to provide.

We sincerely thank our families and wider community for their ongoing support, involvement and commitment to helping our students thrive.

Education Week

This week, Mortlake P-12 College is proud to celebrate Education Week 2026, with this year’s theme, “Showcase your school.” Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate what makes public education so valuable and to highlight the people, programs and places that make each school unique.

At Mortlake P-12 College, what makes us unique is the way we strive to cater for the whole student. We are proud to provide a learning environment that supports students academically, socially, creatively and personally. Across the College, students have access to a diverse range of subjects, experiences and opportunities that allow them to explore their interests, develop their strengths and build confidence for the future.

Throughout Education Week, we will be celebrating the many things that make our College special. On Monday, we are excited to welcome children from Mortlake Kindergarten, who will join us to experience what school life is like. Our students involved in the upcoming school production of Oz are also working hard in rehearsals as they prepare for the live performances later this term. Across the week, there will be daily celebrations throughout the College that showcase our wonderful facilities, dedicated staff and, most importantly, our amazing students. We will conclude the week with our Community Walk Safely to School event on Friday, and we look forward to seeing families join us in promoting healthy and safe travel to school.

Mobile phones at school

A reminder to families that we are continuing to see issues with students having and using mobile phones during the school day. In line with Department of Education policy, mobile phones must not be used during school hours. If a student has their phone on them during the school day, it will be confiscated and can be collected from the office at the end of the day. We appreciate families’ support in reinforcing this expectation with their child.

2027 Student Enrolments

It is that time of year when we are beginning to finalise our 2027 Foundation (Prep) and Year 7 enrolments. Early planning is essential in helping us effectively support all students, allocate staffing and resources, determine subject offerings, and create a smooth and positive transition into our College.

2027 enrolment forms must be submitted to the school office no later than Friday 26 June. Enrolment packs can also be collected from the office at any time.

Finalising enrolments by this date is important, as it allows the College to begin planning for the 2027 school year with greater accuracy. This includes preparing staffing structures, class groupings, subject offerings and the learning and wellbeing supports required for our students.

If families know that their child will not be enrolled at Mortlake College in 2027, we would also appreciate being advised of this before the end of Term 2, as this information further supports our planning.

We encourage our current families to share this information with friends, neighbours and members of the wider community who may have children starting Prep or Year 7 in 2027. Your support plays an important role in helping us plan confidently for the future and continue to grow a strong and connected school community.

AEU industrial action and mid-year reports

Families may be aware that members of the Australian Education Union are currently undertaking protected industrial action. One of the bans being implemented relates to written comments on student reports. As a result, mid-year reports will not include written teacher comments.

We understand that written feedback is valued by families. We warmly encourage parents and carers to contact their child’s teacher if they would like further feedback regarding their child’s learning, progress and next steps. Our staff remain committed to supporting every student and working in partnership with families throughout their educational journey.

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is held annually from 27th May to 3rd June. This is an important time for all Australians to learn more about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on how we can each contribute to reconciliation. The 2026 theme is “All In,” which calls on all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation through meaningful action, not simply observation.

At Mortlake P–12 College, we recognise the importance of continuing to build understanding, respect and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. Reconciliation Week provides a valuable opportunity for our school community to reflect on the role education plays in fostering respect, truth-telling and stronger relationships for the future.

Walk Safely to School Day

Join us on Friday 22nd May for Walk Safely to School Day! All students and parents are warmly invited to take part in this fun community event. Please meet at Clarks Cafe at 8.10am to walk together to school. Bus travellers will be dropped off at the rose garden and will join in the walk with everyone else along the way. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy some fresh air, stay active and connect with our school community. To celebrate the occasion, Breakfast Club will move from Thursday to Friday so students can enjoy breakfast on arrival. During Education Week, students can also participate in a colouring competition, with Walk Safely to School Day as a feature. Our local police officer will be our special guest judge and will choose the best colouring entries.

Parent Payments

Thank you to all families who are up to date with their Parent Payments or are currently on a payment plan. Your contributions make a significant difference to our college and directly support the programs, resources, and opportunities we are able to provide for our students.

We ask all families to please familiarise themselves with the Parent Payment Policy. As outlined, all extra-curricular activities are offered on a user-pays basis. The college is committed to providing advance notice of these opportunities, so families have time to plan and budget accordingly.

Parent Payments are critical in enabling the college to deliver high-quality programs, resources, and experiences that best support student learning, engagement, and wellbeing. We greatly appreciate your support in ensuring these contributions are made.

We kindly ask that families make every effort to finalise their 2026 Parent Payments as soon as possible. If you have any questions or require support with payment options, please contact the office.

Our school team is always here to support our students and families.

Please reach out to us at any time if you have questions or need assistance.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our College community.
