Chatham Happenings

Year 3/4 STEM Project

Year 3/4 have been very busy learning about iconic structures around the world, as part of our STEM unit of inquiry. Students were invited to build a significant structure and then write up a small report or PowerPoint about their structure. We spent a wonderful time together in the STEM room, looking at all our structures and listening to our classmates about interesting facts and information about various structures. We travelled from Sydney - The Sydney Harbour Bridge, to Paris - The Eiffel Tower, to Canberra - Australian Parliament House, to The Golden Gate Bridge located in California, connecting the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County and so many more.

Year 3/4 Bee Incursion

The Year 3/4 students had a wonderful Bee incursion on Tuesday 19th May with Mary, our local Beekeeper from Backyard Honey.

The students learnt all about the importance of bees in our life and how helpful these little creatures are for our food production.

Here are some quotes from the students on the day:

  • It was interesting to learn that male bees get kicked out of the hive by the female bees
  • The queen bees live for 2 to 7 years
  • The bees do the wiggle dance to show how far away the flowers are from the hive
  • If we did not have bees some foods would be more expensive
  • I had the best time at the bee incursion and here are some facts! First is that bees have 5 eyes! That’s crazy, am I right?!
  • The worker bees gather the nectar by sticking their tongues into flowers
  • The female bees begin their work from the moment they hatch
  • There is only one queen bee in a hive
  • I was shocked and disgusted when I heard that bees have two tummies!
  • I was so excited because we were tasting 100% Aussie honey. It was so delicious and scrumptious because there was a lot of sugar and I love sugar!

Day of the Notables

As part of our Day of the Notables celebrations, our Year 5 students demonstrated outstanding creativity and teamwork throughout the day. Without the use of digital devices, students embraced hands-on learning experiences, collaborated thoughtfully with their peers, and challenged themselves to think creatively in new ways. It was wonderful to see students communicate and engage so enthusiastically in every activity. The day highlighted the many strengths of our Year 5 cohort — their resilience, imagination, and ability to work together while having plenty of fun along the way. We are incredibly proud of the positive attitude and maturity they showed, making the day a memorable success for all involved.

State Schools' Spectacular

On Tuesday 26th May, our State Schools' Spectacular team travelled to Mont Albert Primary School with Ms Kirstie Briggs to participate in the third Eastern Metro Rehearsal.

Throughout the day, students practised their seven assigned dances and continued learning the next steps for their songs. These rehearsals are demanding and require a great deal of energy, focus and concentration from everyone involved.

It was wonderful to see how much progress the students have made and it is clear that their hard work and dedication is paying off. The team will continue rehearsing at school as they prepare for the regional rehearsal on Friday 7th August.
