Year 8 students did a fantastic job creating imaginative posters on famous Italian film directors and actors and presenting their work to the class. Bravi!
We had a small group of students this semester studying Year 9 Drama and it was a very interesting experience to work with mostly EAL students. We undertook a series of research tasks and even joined the Year 10 EAL English class to explore the themes of the play Twelve Angry Men through a drama workshop. We also went to the Malthouse Theatre together where we were ushered around the theatre and its backstage areas, with various designers and workers talking to the students about their craft. Two areas that fascinated the students in particular were the set and costume workshops. The students then were allowed to try on costumes and then undertake a drama workshop with a local artist. To finish off a fantastic day, we were invited to share a delicious lunch at the theatre’s restaurant.
The Year 9 Drama class then decided to explore elements of Butoh theatre and apply some of those ideas in their performance of The Ghost of Iowa, a famous Japanese tale of a vengeful woman betrayed by her husband. The biggest challenge was in transforming B5 into a performance space to create the haunting tale one stage.
