Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year – The Year of The Horse
This year, the Lunar New Year was celebrated from the 17th to the 27th of February. This is a special time of the year for students to learn about different cultures and appreciate how these cultures have impacted the Australian way of life.
Our students engaged in classroom activities, Art lessons, Food Tech lessons and Hospitality classes to honour and celebrate this significant event. Many beautiful artworks, posters and displays were created.
We take this opportunity to wish all the families in the Heatherwood community who celebrate this occasion A Very Happy Lunar New Year.

Yee Sang or Prosperity Salad (also known as Prosperity Toss)
This is a symbol of Good Luck for the year.
It is a well-balanced salad served on a large platter, tossed with chopsticks while making wishes for the New Year.
Each ingredient has symbolic significance. Students grated, shredded and julienned the vegetables, fried strips of wonton and chicken (our substitute for raw salmon)
Our colourful platters were garnished with pickled ginger, fried shallots and sesame seeds and drizzled with a tasty sauce to bind the ingredients.
Finally, they all joined in tossing with chopsticks while saying ‘lo hei’ – which translates to ‘tossing good fortune’ or to ‘scoop up wealth’
