The year has begun in the most positive and purposeful way in the Junior School, with two significant events already setting a strong tone for the months ahead.
We were delighted to host our Year 6 Leadership Breakfast and Assembly, a special occasion dedicated to celebrating our Year 6 girls as the leaders of the Junior School. With staff and families present, the girls were formally acknowledged for the important role they play in shaping the culture, spirit and example within our community. It was a proud and affirming moment for them as individuals, and for us as a school.

At Barbreck, we believe in nurturing confident, capable young women. It is particularly powerful to celebrate leadership in a girls’ school setting. Research consistently shows that women in leadership positions contribute to increased productivity, improved organisational culture and enhanced overall performance. By encouraging our Year 6 girls to step into leadership roles with confidence and integrity, we are not only empowering them during their time in the Junior School, but also equipping them with skills and self-belief that will serve them well beyond these years. Listening to our guest speaker at the breakfast, former School Co-Captain Rachel Carton ('25), who spoke of her time at St Catherine's, provided a wonderful example of what these young girls can aspire to in the future. We look forward to seeing how our Year 6s continue to grow in their responsibility as leaders of the Junior School throughout the year.
This sense of momentum continued with our Parent Information Evening on Thursday, which was very well attended. It was heartening to see such a strong turnout from families, reflecting the shared commitment between home and school to provide the very best for our girls.
During the evening, parents were introduced to the development of the School’s new Strategic Plan. This important work will guide Barbreck’s direction in the coming years, ensuring we remain forward-thinking while staying true to our core values. We also outlined the key areas of focus for the Junior School, providing clarity around our academic priorities, wellbeing initiatives, and co-curricular opportunities.
A highlight of the evening was the opportunity for parents to visit classrooms and hear directly from teachers about programs, expectations, and the exciting learning journeys ahead. These presentations offered valuable insight into daily classroom life and further strengthened the partnership between families and staff.
Following the formal sessions, many parents stayed to enjoy a social gathering organised by the PFA. It was a lovely way to conclude the evening, fostering connection and community in a relaxed setting. We are grateful to the PFA for their efforts in making this possible and for the warm, welcoming atmosphere they created.
Our sincere thanks go to all our teachers for the significant time and care invested in preparing for the evening. Their dedication to communication and partnership with families is greatly appreciated, and evenings such as this are a testament to their professionalism and commitment.
It has been a wonderful start to the year as we have watched our new girls settle in at St Catherine’s. Considerable time and care are given to creating a strong sense of belonging and connection to School. Already, we are seeing how confidently the girls are establishing new relationships with their teachers and peers. It is such a joy to witness.
We are looking forward to a great year ahead.
