NAIDOC Week - 50 Years of Deadly
This week, our school community proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week 2026 and its theme, "50 Years of Deadly", recognising five decades of celebrating the strength, resilience, achievements and rich cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Throughout the week, students and staff engaged in a range of meaningful events and activities that fostered learning, connection and cultural understanding.
Highlights included:
✨ A whole-school Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country, featuring a special performance by our School Choir and the opportunity for SRC members and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to walk through the cleansing smoke as part of the ceremony.
✨ A Year 12 Yarning Circle, bringing together Aboriginal community members and student leaders for important conversations, shared experiences and cultural perspectives.
✨ Daily Acknowledgement of Country presentations and NAIDOC-themed activities delivered through Core Groups.
✨ Student participation in a vibrant Chalk Walk mural, creating a collaborative artwork celebrating culture, identity and community.
✨ Arts and cultural stalls, including bracelet making, alongside lunchtime entertainment from DJ Chips and student dance performances.
These celebrations reflect the ongoing work of our school's Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), which provides a framework for strengthening cultural responsiveness across our school. This year we have continued to make meaningful progress, including the renaming of our school houses and mascots, enhancing student wellbeing structures, and establishing a partnership with Self-Made Incorporated, creating valuable opportunities for Aboriginal students to connect with culture.
We are also excited about future initiatives, including Two-Way Science and the development of a dedicated Yarning Circle, which will further strengthen understanding, connection and opportunities for all students.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this year's NAIDOC Week celebrations so meaningful. We look forward to continuing our reconciliation journey with students, families and the wider community as we work together to build a culturally responsive school where everyone belongs.
Deadly Dreamers Launches at Applecross Senior High School
Last week we proudly launched a new program, Deadly Minds, facilitated by the Self-Made Indigenous Corp team. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students will meet fortnightly to explore deeper connections through art and other ways of learning.
If your child is Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and you would like more information about Deadly Minds, or about our after-school tutoring program Follow the Dream, please contact the school and you will be directed to the Follow the Dream Coordinator.
