The Promise of Hope in Jesus

As we come into the Christmas season, it is joyful to be able to reflect on the manner in which the prophet Isaiah tells us why the birth of Jesus is such great news for the world.

In Isaiah 9:2, we read "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness, a light has dawned."

The good news in Isaiah comes to people who were “walking in darkness.", and have now seen "a great light.” in this context, darkness and light are used metaphorically to show the contrast between sin and salvation. Without Jesus, we are lost in the darkness of sin - however through the birth of Jesus, we instead can have hope in God’s light, which is his victory over sin and death. Therefore, God provides us with salvation in Jesus.

In our wider world as we look at different conflicts and events, as well as through challenging times in our own lives, it can sometimes feel as though the darkness is strong and significant. It can also feel like sadness and sin have an ascendancy, while the light of goodness and joy are obscured and pushed to the side, somewhat hidden.

Isaiah promises us that light is coming to the world in Jesus - a Saviour whom we have seen in previous devotions will rule the world. “He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” As King, Jesus brings peace and joy to the world. “Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.”

What amazing news - certainly light for a darkened world.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the promise of light to overcome darkness and for the goodness and joy you bring through the salvation we enjoy through Jesus, and celebrate this Christmas. Thank you for your love for us in sending Jesus to become our Saviour, Lord, and King. Amen.

Blessings!
