Arrive On-Time, Morning Circles and Ready to Learn

Each morning, all students at Milgate Primary School (unless attending a specialist class) participate in a Morning Circle. Morning Circle is a consistent, school-wide routine designed to support all students to start the day positively and to be Ready to Learn.

The purpose of Morning Circle is to build positive classroom relationships, strengthen students’ understanding of our school values, reinforce expected behaviours and prepare students for a successful day of learning. Through structured conversations, check-ins and shared routines, students develop a sense of belonging, connection and readiness for the day ahead.

Supporting students to be Ready to Learn is a shared partnership between home and school. We kindly ask all families to ensure that children arrive at school and are in their classrooms by 8:50-9:00am each morning so that they can fully benefit from this important daily routine.

COLOUR RUN

The Milgate Colour Run was a fantastic whole-school event that brought students, staff, and families together for an afternoon of fun and school spirit. Students enjoyed completing the course while being cheered on and covered in colour along the way.

Year 1 Incursion

On Wednesday the 13th of May, the Year 1 students were immersed in the wonders of our solar system. While sitting inside the pop-up planetarium, we observed patterns and changes in the sky with stars and planets. We learned about constellations and were introduced to compass directions. When we were not in the pop-up planetarium we investigated how Earth orbits around the sun with its moon and how light sources make shadows.

Year 2 Art Incursion

On Monday 18th May, the Year 2 students participated in an Indigenous Art Incursion with Shanai from Maloga Art. Students explored Indigenous symbols, storytelling and artistic expression while making connections to our Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves. This learning experience helped students deepen their understanding into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Many students also linked this experience with the Sir Doug Nicholls round that just occurred in the AFL. We also found out that Shanai designed the Carlton football guernsey.

Grandparents & Special Friends Day

On Wednesday 20 May, we held our annual Grandparents & Special Friends Day. Our students welcomed their special people into the classroom to share in their learning and experiences for the morning, before sharing a fun picnic together.

There were wonderful opportunities for connection and learning across generations. As part of their How the World Works unit of inquiry, Year 4 students interviewed their grandparents and special friends about what technology was like when they were younger. There were also plenty of opportunities for fun and friendly competition, with some special guests joining in lacrosse training or challenging students to maths games.

Thank you to all of the grandparents and special friends who joined us for the day. Your time, stories, encouragement, and involvement helped make the experience so meaningful for our students and school community.

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK

From the 27th of May to 3rd of June it is National Reconciliation Week (NRW). It is a week dedicated to fostering reconciliation as a country and community. This year the theme is All In. Two significant dates are recognised during this week - the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

For more information about the week see Reconciliation Australia’s website.

During NRW, Milgate Primary School will be holding a Welcome to Country Ceremony on Friday the 29th of May. We are fortunate this year to welcome back Ganga Giri for a yidaki performance and to have Elder John Terrick join us to conduct the Welcome to Country ceremony.

We welcome the wider school community to attend to be a part of Milgate’s journey to reconciliation. The ceremony will take place in the stadium at 3:10pm.

Traffic, Bike Safety and Kiss and Go Reminders

All families are reminded to take extra care on the roads surrounding our school and to use the Kiss and Go zones as intended.

Bike Safety: To help keep everyone safe, please remember:

  • Wearing a helmet is non-negotiable - it's the law!
  • Students riding to school must take care around pedestrians and follow road rules.
  • Students are not permitted to ride bikes inside the school grounds during peak times: 8:45–9:00am and 3:30–3:45pm.

Kiss and Go Reminders:

  • Kiss and Go zones are for quick drop-off and pick-up only. Please only use these zones if your children are ready to exit or enter the car promptly. Parking is strictly limited to 2 minutes.
  • Please drive all the way forward into the Kiss and Go zone to help prevent traffic banking up behind you.
  • Children should only enter or exit cars once you have fully entered the Kiss and Go zone.
  • U-turns across solid white lines, particularly on Landscape Drive, are not permitted.

Finally, please take your time. Even on rushed mornings, arriving safely is always the priority.

Parent Payment Reminders

Thank you to the families who have been able to support the school this year through the Parent Payments Program. Your contributions have a direct and positive impact on our ability to fund resources that enhance classroom and specialist programs. Voluntary contributions also support the ongoing improvement of our facilities, play spaces and gardens — thank you.

In line with the Department of Education’s Parent Payments Policy, reminder letters will be sent home over the coming days to families who have not yet made a voluntary contribution.

If your family is experiencing financial hardship, please contact the school, as support is available.
