WORLD CULTURES

2026

This term, our Castle and Holly classes have begun exploring the amazing continent Africa. Africa is the second-largest continent on Earth and home to 54 recognised countries. Because of this, it is incredibly diverse in language and culture.

Students began by learning about Egypt and its colourful Khan el-Khalili markets in Cairo – a famous 14th-century bazaar and trading hub. Here they discovered the beautiful fanous lantern which is made out of metal and coloured glass and is a symbol of joy, hope and togetherness. Students then made their own three-dimensional fanous lanterns out of paper.

Another interesting thing about this country is how many items we have and use today which originated from ancient Egypt. Things like the toothbrush and toothpaste, hair comb and make up were all used in ancient Egypt. Even the lock and key was first used in Egypt (something to think about next time you use your keys).

We then begun a discussion about traditional housing and structures built in different parts of Africa. Students learnt that African people often use natural materials and curved shapes to fit into the landscape and work with nature. The next week during Reconciliation Week, students focused on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander shelters. These shelters were also made using natural materials and were built in different ways for different purposes. After this, students designed their own structure/shelter using concepts and ideas from Africa, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Meanwhile, our Stillwell students have taken on the role of preparing for World Cultures Day. Each small group selected a country to research, learning about its geography, flag, culture, and important buildings and monuments. They are now beginning the task of planning and creating fun, interactive lessons and activities that they will use to teach the younger students on World Cultures Day.

We’re looking forward to celebrating our HEPS World Cultures Day on Friday of Week 10. More information about this will be shared soon.
