Year 6 trip to the Northern Territory

On the 9th May three staff and 25 students left Melbourne airport for Alice Springs.  The group returned on 17th May.

This is the fourth year we have undertaken this trip and planning for the 2027 trip is already underway.

We spent six nights in Alice Springs and two nights at Yulara.

Yipirinya School | Keeping Aboriginal language & culture alive

The Yipirinya School was established by Aboriginal people in 1978 and is a two-way bi-lingual and bi-cultural school.  It teaches four indigenous languages and English.

Our students spent three days working with the indigenous children at the Yipirinya school, participating in indigenous language classes, sport activities, maths and English classes and generally getting to know the students.  Our students also took a book of photos of their life in Melbourne and a picture story book to share with the Yipirinya students.

We spent two days touring in Alice Springs and two days at Yulara (where we visited both Uluru and Kata Tjuta).  Our guides were exceptional at explaining indigenous culture and significant introductions of the telegraph, Royal Flying Doctors, School of the Air and local indigenous wild life.

I'd like to congratulate our students on being positive ambassadors for our school. They keenly participated in all activities, asking insightful questions to further their understanding. They were recognised on several occassions for their participation, manners and keen interest.

I'd like to thank Cadell Duke and James Prantzos who joined me on the trip.

As our relationship develops with the school we will continue to investigate ways of deepening our connection through curriculum and staff links.

We will be holding an information session in the second half of the year for current Year 5 parents who may be interested in sending their children on this trip next year.
