John Monash Science School

Hi everyone! We are Ranuli, Neha, Rishaan, and Samihan in Year 5 representing GWPS at John Monash Science School for a special program called ‘Little Scientists’. For our second class, we decided to learn about biology, the study of living things.
When we entered the room, we all were surprised to see the word ‘BIOLOGY’ on the screen. Our mentors, who are John Monash Science students, were handing out the white lab coats to everyone and once we all got one we sat down. They then told us to gather around the large whiteboard and write down everything we knew about biology!
We started the lesson with the most random thing. Looking at onion peels! Our mentors, Gabby and Ritesh, set the onion peel under the light of the microscope. Then Gabby handed out a booklet containing the instructions for the lesson. Then we were asked to draw what we think the onion would look like under the 400x٫ 100x and 40x microscope. All of us weren’t ready for the surprise under it.
We were all amazed when we looked through the microscope. The onion peel revealed a world of tiny cells, each looking like little rectangles packed together. It was incredible to see how structured and organised the cells were!
After our drawings, Gabby and Ritesh explained the different parts of the cells we observed, like the cell wall and cytoplasm. We learned about how these cells make up all living things, which tied back to our study of biology.
By the end of the lesson, we felt like real scientists. We couldn’t wait to share what we learned with our classmates back at GWPS!
