Year One
2024
Dear Year One Community,
It’s hard to believe we are already in Week 2 of Term 4! Our Year Ones have been incredibly busy and excited to learn across various subjects. Here’s a snapshot of what they have been up to recently:
Reading
In Reading, students have been exploring the ‘ar’ digraph and have learnt how to identify and pronounce it in words. We’ve also focused on summarising non-fiction texts and taking notes about what we read. The students have practised how to extract key information from non-fiction books, which ties in with their current Inquiry unit.
Writing
Our young writers have been creating persuasive texts! Each student has been working on convincing their audience that their favourite habitat is the best. Through this, students have learned how to form strong opinions and provide reasons to support their arguments. There have been some wonderfully creative and persuasive ideas shared in class.
Mathematics
In Maths, students have been working on collecting and organising data. They conducted surveys in their classes to find out their peers’ favourite sports and colours, using tally marks to record the data. After collecting the data, they created graphs to visually display the results. The students enjoyed this hands-on activity and are becoming more confident with interpreting graphs.
Inquiry
In our Unit of Inquiry, we’re continuing to discuss the characteristics and adaptations of living things. Students have been researching animals and learning how their adaptations help them survive in different habitats. They have also been labelling the adaptations of their chosen animals, connecting their learning in Reading, Writing to Inquiry. The students are showing great curiosity about the natural world!
Reminders:
Kind regards,
The Year One Team.
