Year Seven

Visual art

The Year 7 students worked hard during Term 3, completing their first MYP Creative Design Cycle. They built a strong foundation in art, learning how artists use the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to create impactful works.

This term, students have embarked on their investigation of Unit 2, delving deeper into the world of symbolism. They are uncovering the secrets beyond the canvas, exploring symbolic storytelling by decoding the hidden meanings and messages artists embed in their creations. Students have begun practising artistic methods and techniques from the Surrealism movement, developing works that unlock and explore their subconscious minds. Additionally, they are gaining an understanding of composition methods and how this can help create visually engaging pieces to capture their audience's attention.

English

This term, our Year 7 students have begun their exciting poetry unit. To kickstart their learning, students have spent time breaking down the statement of inquiry, which will guide them throughout the unit. They have also been introduced to notable Australian poets and their works, gaining insights into the rich literary tradition of Australia. Additionally, students have explored modern poets and examined how their environments and experiences have shaped their poetry. We are looking forward to sharing some of the amazing poems that the students are currently working on with you soon.

Mathematics

To start the term, our students have been diving into the world of data. They have chosen real-world data sets—ranging from sports statistics to weather patterns and other areas of interest—and have been working hard to analyse and interpret this data. Throughout this process, students have calculated key measures of central tendency, including the mean and median and interpreted their meaning. These calculations have helped students describe how data is distributed and identify trends.

It’s been wonderful to see their creativity as they present their findings. Some students have created posters, while others have opted for PowerPoint presentations or other formats to showcase their work. Their hard work is evident as they explain the significance of their data, and we encourage you to ask your child to share their project with you—it’s a great way to connect math to the real world!

As we wrap up our data exploration, we will be moving into an exciting new area of study: linear and non-linear relationships. Over the next few weeks, students will be learning how to plot points on the Cartesian plane and how to read and find coordinates for specific points. They will also use their growing knowledge of algebra to solve simple linear equations. This unit will help students understand how algebraic relationships work and set the foundation for more advanced mathematical concepts in the future. Plotting points and interpreting graphs will also deepen their ability to connect visual and numerical representations of mathematical ideas.

We are looking forward to seeing students’ enthusiasm for this topic and the skills they will develop as they explore the fascinating world of algebra and graphs!

Science

Welcome to Term 4 Science!

This term, students will be learning about "Earth and Beyond." In this unit, they will explore and understand our place in the solar system. They will also study the structure of the Earth, it's orbit around the Sun, and how these movements create different seasons and day-night cycles. Students will engage in hands-on activities, discussions, and projects to deepen their understanding of these concepts.

We are excited to see their curiosity grow as they discover more about the wonders of our universe!
