Leadership Report

We’ve reached the halfway mark of the school year — the mathematical midpoint, the equator of education, the point where teachers start measuring time in coffee spoons and students begin dreaming in fractions. It's also time for the much anticipated first episode of Inside Magill. It’s a jam-packed episode featuring highlights from one of the most exciting days of the year — the Mega Mix Fundraiser! You’ll also see what happened when Ava stepped into the role of Principal for a Day. Enjoy the return of Positron and Negatron as they explore our school values and see how our Sustainability Stars have been busy building a brand new garden. There’s also loads of science fun to see — from amazing robots to the incredible animals that help support learning at Magill. A big thanks to Mr Shortt for brining us the latest, and possibly the greatest episode yet, of Inside Magill (video below).
Back to maths — what a term it’s been! From Reception to Year 6, students haven’t just been doing maths, they’ve been thinking about it. One of our focuses this year has been helping students understand where they’re at and their next steps with their maths learning. It’s been incredible hearing students improving their ability talk about what they need to do to improve their maths skills. We’re talking addition, subtraction, place value, multiplication strategies, and yes, even long division (for the brave).
Continuing with the maths theme, our 60 Year 3-6 students participating in the Maths Olympiad competition this year have also done us proud! The Maths Olympiad teams have gone head-to-head with some of the sharpest minds across the country — and guess what? Magill School is hitting well above the national average. Not only are our students strong in their problem-solving skills, they’ve been showing persistence, mathematical reasoning, and a kind of determination usually reserved for untangling headphones that have been in a school bag since 2019.
On that note, a big thank you to Kamal for his fantastic work with the Year 6 students in F2 for the last five weeks. He brought great energy to their learning—helping students build their knowledge about area and perimeter in meaningful ways, making real-world connections along the way. He even managed to weave in some thoughtful discussion about Federation and how it shaped the Australia we know today. Thanks, Kamal!
A Quick reminder, that the first day of Term 3, Monday, 21 July is a pupil free day. That means an extra sleep-in for the kids (you’re welcome), but not for teachers, who’ll be diving deep into professional learning about Effective Teaching using the Instructional Hierarchy. While the students are sipping hot chocolates in their pyjamas, teachers will have their second day with Brendan Lee to sharpen the way we teach Maths at Magill (yes, back to maths again!).
Finally, a very special shoutout to our Principal of the Day, Reception student Ava from N2 — who absolutely nailed the job! From cutting the ribbon on our brand-new playground (scissors handled like a pro), to observing learning in classrooms, handing out awards with flair, and even throwing in a few moves at the disco — she led with style and energy. We’re not saying she’s planning a school takeover, but let’s just say Mr Iannunzio has started hiding his principal badge... Just in case. A big congratulations to all the students who were in the running for Principal of the Day by raising money for our school as part of the Mega Mix Fundraiser. Our Magill community raised an amazing $15,471.74!
Wishing all our families a restful break, and to our students — don’t forget to come back in Term 3 ready to learn, laugh and do lots of maths! (see, I got there again)
See you all next Term.
