Head of Year 7 & 8 News

Ms Masters

Year 8 Camp – Permission forms and the $100 deposit are due today (Friday 25th July). The camp will be held at Tangalooma Island Resort (Moreton Island) during the final Week of Term 4, Monday 8th – Thursday 11th December.

Activities students will participate in during the camp include a desert safari and sand tobogganing, stand-up paddle boarding, sea kayaking, guided snorkelling, dolphin feeding, beach games, bushwalking and a coastal and fish feeding tour. The purpose of this camp is to develop positive relationships amongst the Year 8 students, extend their ability to work within groups and with other students, and to support them in their future role as junior school leaders in 2026. The four-day/three-night camp is more expensive than the typical school camp at $600. Thank you to the students and school community who have supported fundraising efforts to keep the cost at this amount. Payment plans can be organised by contacting the school office.

Brief updates:

  • Year 8 Camp Fundraising – Thank you for supporting the Pie Drive, which raised $700 for the Year 8 Camp.
  • Rewards Trip – Planning is currently underway for the Term 3 rewards trip, and we are looking at a day/twilight excursion to Westfield Indooroopilly. The extended time will allow students the opportunity to shop, go to Timezone or to see a movie.

Bunya to the Bay

Esta Kakakios, Charlie Humphreys and Hunter Masters-Woods attended the Opening Ceremony of the Bunya to the Bay 2025 at Barambah Environmental Education Centre on July 17. Hunter remained at Barambah, where he started Leg 1 of the journey. Hunter was asked to carry the message stick for this cycling and hiking leg.

Esta met Hunter at Harlin SS on Tuesday for the group change-over and to begin her journey from the school, cycling, hiking and canoeing to Wivenhoe Information Centre.

Charlie will take over from Esta for his leg from Wivenhoe Wall to Kohlo Gardens.

The final journey and closing from 6 – 8 August at Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) will be attended by all students.

Every two years, students from across Queensland are invited to apply for the Bunya to the Bay journey. In their applications, students must write about why they would like to be River Ambassadors.

Schedule:

  • Hunter: Leg 1 Barambah EEC – Harlin SS (17-22 July)
  • Esta: Leg 2 Harlin to Wivenhoe Information Centre (22-27 July)
  • Charlie: Leg 3 Wivenhoe to Kohlo Gardens/Mt Crosby Weir (27 July – 1 August).
  • Leg 4 is from Mt Crosby Weir to Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre (1 – 5 August), and the final part of the journey includes all students who will head over to Minjerribah (6-8 August).

“The journey follows the Brisbane River from the Mountains and Bunya forests of the South Burnett to Minjerribah in Moreton Bay. Four connected legs traverse Country for 23 consecutive days. All four Ambassador teams come together to attend the Opening Ceremony. Then, one leg at a time, teams follow the river to the sea, learning, listening and connecting along the way. At the end, all of the Ambassador teams reunite at Wynnum, and travel together to Minjerribah for a 3-day, 2-night experience, bringing the story together in preparation for the Closing Ceremony.”
