5/6 Learning News

Woah, how quickly has this term gone by! The last few weeks have been full of great learning and leadership. It’s been amazing to see our 5/6s grow into confident, independent, and capable young people. I’m really proud of them!

Dirrarn: Novel Study
Our 5/6 learners have continued to explore and appreciate Aboriginal culture, while also connecting with themes of new friends, new ideas, and new ways of thinking.
As part of our study of Dirrarn (meaning Black Cockatoo), each learner is writing a chapter summary. They are taking detailed notes, identifying key moments, and including quotes from main characters to support their ideas.
This has helped everyone stay engaged and created a great display of our learning.
We invite you to come and see the display during our Learning Exhibition on the last day of Term!
Numeracy
Decimal Numbers
This week, we kicked off a new maths unit on decimal numbers a topic many learners were unsure about at first. We have explored the place value system of decimals, looked closely at numbers to the tenths and hundredths using MAB blocks, and practised reading and writing decimal numbers. We also learned how to rename decimals in different ways, like recognising that 0.57 is equivalent to 57 hundredths or 5 tenths and 7 hundredths.
It’s been fantastic to see how much confidence has grown already!
Learners reflected on what helped them succeed so far:
Persistence and not giving up
Believing my brain could do it
Staying focused
Using the MAB to make the decimal numbers
Choose Day
Sewing Group
Our Sewing Choose Day group has been hard at work learning to sew, with wonderful support from Nan. They’ve mastered the basics, sewing in a straight line, changing direction, and joining two pieces of fabric together. Nan and I have been so impressed by their progress, and we’re excited to see where their talents will take them next!

Our Community
Our leaders have been hard at work planning and organising events as we head towards the end of Term. Their dedication and teamwork are helping bring some exciting activities to life for everyone to enjoy!
