Foundation News

Dear Families,
Our classroom is full of energy and many thoughtful moments. It’s lovely spending each school day together.
Literacy
This fortnight, we have continued exploring new letter sounds and building on our sentence-writing skills. A strong focus has been placed on sentence structure, with students engaging in cut-and-paste activities that encourage problem solving as they work out the correct order of words. There has been a growing awareness of the importance of starting sentences with capital letters and ending them with full stops. We’ve also started sounding out words with four phonemes, such as skip, tent, and stop.
When it comes to reading, it’s been wonderful to see the children’s excitement as they eagerly get out their readers each day and read to one another with increasing independence and fluency.
Worry Monsters
After reading the Very Hungry Worry Monster, children made their own worry monsters!
Maths
This fortnight, we continued developing our understanding of measurement concepts, focusing on shape and length. Students quickly made connections between length and their everyday experiences, using familiar examples to help deepen their understanding. Together, we brainstormed language associated with length and used informal units, like blocks, to compare and measure various objects around the classroom.
We also continue working on counting skills, with a strong focus on counting backwards. Through number games, students are strengthening their ability to quickly recall the numbers that come before and after. Students have also been working on writing two-digit numbers.
The Daycare
Our Foundation class has brought a truly special project to life, our very own classroom daycare program. What began as a simple idea has evolved into a vibrant and imaginative space complete with bottles, nappies, highchairs, baths and even two bassinets. The children have embraced real-life learning through their play experiencing the day-to-day responsibilities of running a daycare. Students enjoy ‘dropping off’ their baby before school and picking them up at the end of each school day. They have created a daycare rhythm which includes roll call, feeding times, changing and nap times. Through this rich play experience, they’ve learnt to take turns, share, build resilience and strengthen connections within our class and with students from other classrooms too.
