A message from our principal

Principal’s message

At Sunbury College, we know that success at school, and in life, isn’t only about natural talent or intelligence. It’s about developing the right habits, and these habits include consistent effort, organisation, responsibility, and persistence. Positive habits help our students grow, achieve their goals, and thrive beyond the classroom.

Whether it’s completing homework on time, preparing for assessments, managing time well, or simply showing up ready to learn – positive work habits are the foundation of academic achievement and personal growth.

Our teaching and support staff work closely with students to help them build these habits. From setting high expectations and implementing a consistent instructional model, to utilising a range of positive behaviour management strategies, we are committed to equipping students with the tools and routines they need to take control of their learning. We also work in partnership with families, as the reinforcement of positive habits at home can make a lasting difference.

Importantly, we encourage students to reflect on their effort and progress. The learning journey will include challenges, but habits like resilience and acting on feedback can turn setbacks into opportunities for growth.

Strong work habits aren’t just about results, they build character. They develop a sense of pride, independence and self-belief – qualities that will serve our students well in every stage of life.

Each student at Sunbury College strives to achieve improvement and consistent application of the following work habits:

-           Behaves well and respects the learning environment

-           Shows endeavour and uses class time effectively

-           Engages in learning by listening and questioning

-           Prepares well for assessment tasks

-           Acts on feedback

-           Meets work deadlines

-           Brings correct equipment to class

It was a privilege to present the Principal’s Awards on Wednesday 2nd July to those students who excelled in their work habits in Semester 1 and achieved 3.90 or over, across each of their classes. I also acknowledge that there were many students that weren’t at the awards ceremony, though they achieved significant growth in their work habits over the last 6 months.

Thank you for your ongoing support in helping your child develop the work habits. Together, we can ensure that every student at Sunbury College has the structure, encouragement, and motivation to succeed.

Best wishes,

Craig O’Bree
