Students Attitude to School Survey  (Years 4 to 6)

This year, the survey will be conducted between the 27th May and the 14th June.

 Welcome to IPS

Primary school is not only about the acquisition of academic knowledge but also the development of  social-emotional competencies that are essential for a well-rounded education.

At IPS we aim to foster curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration to shape students' lifelong learning journeys and to prepare them for success.

Primary school education is  multilayered in nature, and we should not underestimate the profound impact it has on students' intellectual, social, and emotional development. Here's the soft sell...Get involved where you can. Classrooms, Sport, FMP, Camps, Swimming programs,  Working Bees etc...

Get in touch with your child's teacher and they will help you find where you can add value.

National Reconciliation Week

This week Ivanhoe Primary School continued our celebration of National Reconciliation Week (NRW) – 27 May to 3 June.  Reconciliation being about strengthening relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.

May 27th marked the anniversary of the 1967 referendum when Australians voted to remove clauses in the Australian Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

On Monday, Dion Drummond captivated our school with a performance of dance, songs and demonstrations of tools and musical instruments.

Dion Drummond Performance

Dion is one of Australia’s most experienced Indigenous performers, covering both Mainland and Islander cultures as a dancer, singer and storyteller.

Dion Drummond’s Aboriginal name is “Moogera”, meaning storm. He is of Torres Strait Islander descent on his mother Cindy’s side, and Aboriginal from his late father’s side (Cape York Peninsula). Dion was born in Mossman (Kuku-Yalangi Tribal area) 80km north of Cairns in Queensland.

Dion Drummond Teaches IPS Teachers to Dance

In his dynamic, high energy performance, Dion shared tales, language and artefacts from both of his cultures, teaching students about the different traditions of his Torres Strait Island and Aboriginal Indigenous heritage.

Students (and teachers) participated in learning actions of songs and dances, and Dion highlighted some important values, such as respect, with humour and energy.

Mathematics Curriculum 2.0

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) published its revised Mathematics Curriculum (Mathematics curriculum 2.0) last year.

All Victorian government schools will start using the Mathematics Curriculum 2.0 in 2024 or 2025. Ivanhoe Primary School commenced teaching Mathematics using the revised curriculum this year and will begin reporting students’ achievement against the new curriculum standards this semester.

On previous semester reports, the teacher reported against 3 strands of the achievement standard for Mathematics (Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability). Under the revised Mathematics curriculum 2.0, teachers are now required to report against the achievement standard as a whole, providing a single, aggregated score.

Year 1 & 2 Playground a Reality

The new playground is scheduled to be installed in the July break. Initially the location was to be at the lower level between the Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms. However, the size of the playground equipment has necessitated a change of location, and will now be adjacent to the Year 2 building beneath the Shade Sail.

Thank you to the students and teachers in the Year 1 and Year 2 classes for their input into design and colour scheme.

IPS Dress Code Policy reminder

Dress codes with gender specific requirements are not necessarily discriminatory under the law, unless one gender is treated less favourably than the other because of the dress code. However, Department policy requires schools and School Councils to develop, as far as practicable, dress code requirements that are similar for both sexes. Where options are available, they should be available to all students.

There have been a number of queries regarding the wearing of makeup. While the policy can be downloaded below, the following excerpt addresses the question that was asked.

General appearance

While at school, travelling to or from school or participating in school activities, all students must comply with the following:

  • Uniforms must be clean and in good repair
  • Uniforms must be clearly marked with the owner’s name
  • Additional layers of clothing may be worn underneath the uniform for added warmth.

Jewellery and cosmetics

  • Students are not permitted to wear decorative jewellery to school. Stud earrings and sleepers worn in the ears, and watches, are the only acceptable jewellery.
  • Cosmetics may not be worn at school. Only clear nail polish is permitted.

Battle of the Bands

Another exciting school event is coming up!  Students in Years 5 and 6 are already putting in the hard yards with lots of practice.  The much anticipated, Battle of the Bands 2024 will be presented on 20th June!  Families are welcome to come along to watch along with the student audience.  It's set to be another showcase of how talented our students are!

Finally

Establishing and maintaining meaningful relationships between staff, students, and parents goes a long way to creating a positive school learning environment.

I have worked in Australian schools since my first teaching role in 1987 in Portland Victoria. Thoughout all these years one of the things i value most about working in education is the time that you get to spend with students working with them and having opportunities to authentically connect in ways that encourages each to enjoy school and value learning.

Being visible is Important to me. That most students know who I am, and feel comfortable talking to me makes every day a rewarding day.

Thank you for your support.
