Year 9 Urban Art

Over the term, our Urban Art students have been working towards creating their very own Hosier Lane right here at Doncaster Secondary College. On Wednesday 26th June, we had the grand reveal as students installed their mural art wall right outside B Block.

For the artworks, students used varied techniques, such as spray-painting stencils, painting and collage, to create artworks that conveyed issues and cultural themes that are important to them. The artworks have been applied to the brick wall using the same flour/water glue mix that is used to fix posters on urban walls.

Just like the transient nature of urban art, this installment will eventually wear away (or get pressure-hosed off).

Year 9 Cluster Day - Makers

On Wednesday 29th May, our Year 9s participated in their second Career Cluster Day, with this edition's theme being 'Makers'.

Makers work with their hands as they monitor, build, fix, grow, and maintain. The Makers are busy people who keep everything up and running. There are few desk jobs in this cluster. Most Makers can be found using specialised equipment, moving between worksites, and using their technical skills alongside their specialised knowledge.

Our students rotated through the following presentations and hands-on demonstrations:

  • Welding

We need more females in welding! Only 1% are represented in this field. Females make great welders because they listen and learn. Being good at Maths/STEM is an advantage, but if you've got an excellent attitude and are keen to learn, you'll go well.

- Nigel, Weld Australia

  • Construction

Understanding the importance of right angles and the 3-4-5 method in bricklaying.

  • Locksmith

It takes three years of training and one year of practice before you can become a qualified locksmith. The work is challenging, diverse but so rewarding.

- Christian from Wynns

  • Floristry

Sammy from Canterbury Rd Flower Gallery walked students through the basics of arrangement.

A highlight of the day were the incredible guest speakers from Empowered Women in Trades! Their mission? To increase female and non-binary representation in the trades industry from 3% to 30% by 2030.

Our female-identifying students were inspired as they learned about the wide range of opportunities in trades-related fields. They also got hands-on experience using tools to make their own planter boxes! It was an eye-opening and empowering morning, showing our students that the future of trades is fulfilling and inclusive.

Let's not forget the Subject Expo! All of our Year 9 students were given a Subject Expo Passport and were asked to visit every subject stall. Keeping an open mind, students were tasked with asking three questions each from subject teachers and student representatives.
