Maths Olympiads

On Tuesday the 22nd of August our Maths Olympiad team travelled to Heathmont College and participated in collborative problem solving with Year 7 and 8 students and some of their Maths teachers. Thanks to Mr. Corso and Mrs. Elliott for being the bus drivers and working alongside the students at the college.

Students worked in mixed teams to understand, apply, analyse and evaluate maths problems. They collaborated together, strengthening their understanding of how to draw connections between ideas, justify their decisions and support their thinking by making judgements based on evidence. Our HEPS team needs to be congratulated on their teamwork and growth.

If you would like to think like an Olympiad here are some examples of what our team has worked on -

Question 1 - Calculate 4 × 5 × 6 × 25. Explain your thinking.

Question 2 - Velma, Fred and Ted share a locker. Velma says that the locker code is a 2-digit number. Fred says that the locker code is divisible by 9. Ted says that the locker code has 9 factors. What is the locker code?

Question 3 - Think of all the 2-digit numbers that only have the digits 3, 5 or 7 in them. Two of these numbers are 33 and 35. Find the sum of all such 2-digit numbers.
