National Science Week

National Science Week
We have had so much fun with DreamCity this week for National Science Week! With this years theme of 'Innovations: Powering Future Industries' we decided to focus on the innovations around us. Students got experience in a number of different industries and gained insight into how science has advanced each one.
Sports Science
Students experiences ways that sports scientists collect data to support our elite athletes like the Matildas. Students tested their strength, agility and jumping skills whilst collecting data on their performance. They used the data to look for trends and understand why they may have performed better or worse their second time around.
Robotic engineer
Students were exposed to the challenges of robotics and coding. They learned that robots are not very clever and can go rogue. But if humans get their coding right, they can do amazing things and be lots of fun!
Electrical Engineer
Students learned that there's a lot going on behind flicking on a light switch when they had a go at being electrical engineers. They made lights turn on, fans spin and alarms sound out by completing electrical circuits.
Neonatal Nurses
Students got the chance to experience the data collection involved when a baby is born using state of the art simulated babies. They measured and recorded the weight, length and head circumference of the babies all while keeping the baby from crying. This meant feeding them, changing their nappies and even swaddling them and giving them a cuddle.
Virtual Reality
The overwhelming favourite science week activity was the virtual reality experience. Students wore VR headsets to enter a new world. Using hand controllers, they were able to manipulate objects within this world. The wonder and awe of the students was a joy to watch. They learned about VR is used in the real world to help fire fighters and architects with their jobs.
