Hola a todos!

There was a lot going on this week and it still hasn’t finished! It all started with blood, sweat and tears at our Working Bee and finishes tonight with the much anticipated Newlands Comedy Gala (and the Newlands Fantasy League draft night!). There is still a lot to share in between, so I refer you to the Newlands in a nutshell page to avoid having to read the elaborated non-succinct writing below.

Working Bee

Wheelbarrows, shovels and potato cakes were the fond memories of Sunday. Thank you to the community that gave up their morning to come down and help the Buildings and Grounds team clean up the front of the school. As you may have noticed the front of the school looks significantly more inviting due to the hard work of our dedicated community. The rumours of expanding the vegetable garden seems to be the favourite for the next working bee which will take place in Term 4 on Sunday the 19th of November.

Dream City – Science Incursion continued

Raema who spends her time in the staffroom sharing her favourite formulas and elements from the periodic table, has gone over and above to ensure our students had the time of their lives to coincide with Science Week. All the students in the school are raving about their Virtual Reality experiences and the sports testing simulator and it was fantastic to see how effective our students were in solving the issues of crying babies! Raema has been integral to the implementation of the STEAM specialist program , ensuring that it is engaging and is looked forward to by our students each and every week!

Dance ‘N’ Schools

Joel has unfortunately hurt himself with back breaking parenting which is limiting his ability to share his dance moves with the class, so he has hired the expertise of Dance’N’Schools whom are leading the Music/Performing Arts program over the next four weeks. Our students have been involved in lots of fun warm up activities allowing students to learn all the cool dance moves they need to support the students for the upcoming Cultural week dance during our Chilean ‘Fiestas patrias’ festivities.

District Athletics / Newlands World Cup

While the school had the opportunity to witness the elite athleticism that took place at the Newlands Athletics Carnival last week, this week was an opportunity to share our team with the district. We are so proud of how all of our students competed to their best ability and continued to show our school values to the rest of the district, congratulating other participants and making new friends. A big thank you to Raul and the Newlands families that came out to support. While we continue to bask in the glory of our World Cup soccer team, the Newlands World Cup continues on the Newlands grounds during lunchtime. Soccer fever is in full effect and we hope for Australia to bring home bronze and hope Espana brings home the gold!

Immigration Museum

Our 2/3s went to the city centre to the Immigration Museum. Simon has been asking staff for the last two weeks for suitcases to carry all the student lunches in between organising an excursion that includes quality public transport travel. The excursion coincides with the inquiry focus of history and family history. The students had the opportunity to explore the sculptures along Sandridge bridge and learnt about different stories of how people and families migrated to Australia. The 2/3 team have been working tirelessly in providing opportunities for our students and want to congratulate them for all their efforts.

Open Afternoon of Learning

At 2:30pm today, we are once again inviting all families to come into their child’s classroom to join in on the activities. The teachers have prepared learning experiences for parents to be involved in. We ask families to wait in two lines out the front of the classroom and wait for a teacher before entering the classroom!

Comedy Gala

Tonight is the night! We have been talking this up for weeks! If you don’t have a ticket get in quick, as it closes at midday today. For more information check out the Comedy Gala page!

Love to the Fam

The 'Love to the Fam' Family Fiesta will be taking place at the Brunswick Ballroom at 1pm sharp on the 27th of August. This promises to be a day full of music, art and dancing.

TeamKids Q&A (Holiday Program Information Session)

TeamKids have organised an online session next Wednesday the 23rd of August. This is an opportunity to hear about TeamKids and the program they will be providing to our students. Below is correspondence from Daniel and the team as well as the meeting link.

Newlands Primary has recently partnered with TeamKids to operate a Holiday Program at our school, commencing for these Spring holidays!!

You are invited to attend an online TeamKids information webinar via Teams.

Please join TeamKids via the Teams link below on Wednesday 23rd August from 6:30 – 7:00 pm to hear all about what they will be providing at Newlands Primary School Vacation Care and have all your questions answered.

For those that can’t attend on the night, a recording of the session will be made and sent out so you can watch it at a more convenient time.

Tom Civil

A big thank you to Tom, our incredible artist and parent, whom was responsible for providing such an engaging art exhibition along the fence line at Newlands Primary. He has given up his time to repaint and move the school’s art piece around, to once again make our community’s walk near Newlands Primary School that much better. Tom has also added a few new characters, if anyone can identify what they are, you are in for a special treat which will be given at next week’s assembly!

Book Week

Next Week is Book Week and Newlands is once again ensuring that we celebrate it the Newlands way. Not only will teachers be reading their favourite childhood books in the library at lunchtime each day. Author Anna Battese will be with us on Wednesday, the famous author of the PD McPem's Mystery series. She will be reading a section of one of her books and will be available to answer any questions students may have about her famous series or about what life is like as a writer. As always, the book parade will be the focus for assembly. We can’t wait to see what our students and teachers will be dressed up as. The winner of the bookmark competition will also be announced. A big thank you to David for organising such a fun week of activities!

Purple Day

Purple Day is next Friday! (same day as the book parade). Purple Day is an important event on our school calendar that supports and celebrates our rainbow students. Newlands is committed to ensuring that our school is a safe space for students to be who they want to be. Newlands will continue to support every student to be who they want to be. As Purple Day coincides with the book parade, we are asking all students to wear purple proudly on Thursday instead.

*Please note the Grade 1 sleepover will be changed on the calendar to Thursday 26th of October instead of the advertised Friday 27th of October. More information about the evening will be shared very soon!
