Grade 2 Community News

Dear Grade 2 families and caregivers,

Term 4 is moving quickly and we are proud of the tremendous start we have made to this long term.

In Reading, we are learning about life cycles. Life cycles are cycles that repeat over and over and show how new life is created. We have closely looked at the life cycle of a chicken, frog and butterfly. We have lots of prior knowledge from STEM! Students have reflected on their learning and built new ideas.

In Writing, we have been focusing on syntax, especially parts of a sentence. Did you know every sentence needs to have a subject and predicate? We are also writing explanation texts linked to our learning in reading. We have written an explanation about the cycle of day and night and also the life cycle of a frog. It is great to apply our knowledge in different learning areas.

In Maths we have started learning about fractions. We have been shading in parts of a shape and then writing the corresponding fraction. The number we record at the bottom of the fraction is how many parts of the whole shape there are, and the number at the top is how many parts have been shaded. We will also be learning about collections of things and how we can use fractions to divide them.

Our class text is Rowan of Rin. As well as enjoying the adventure story, we have been learning new vocabulary: dull, frail, doubt, slender and torment. We are glad that Rowan has stopped doubting himself and is being brave through the torment of the mountain.

We have been learning about how words are formed (morphology), with a focus on different suffixes for instance, suffix ness. Did you know you can add it to a base word to change an adjective to a noun which shows the state of something. For example, kindness is when someone is in the state of being kind.

We have been rotating between cyber safety and health. In cyber safety we are learning about personal information and how to be safe online. In health we are making our own health messages, or ads with a health or safety message for instance, water safety.

 Reminders

  • We have a fantastic excursion to Scienceworks in Week 9. Be sure to consent and pay on compass so that no child misses out on this amazing learning experience.
  • As the weather warms up ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the day, including hat and water bottle.
  • Some students have already reached 200 nights of reading! Continue to ensure your child reads every night and records it into their diary.
