Visual Arts News

Grade Prep:

Artists have used the story ‘Diary of a wombat’’ by Jackie French as inspiration for painting a landscape background. They used watercolour paints to paint the ground and sky in appropriate colours, thinking about the Australian outback and what colours would be appropriate. They used straight brushstrokes and experimented with painting details like grass, trees and clouds. This background has been then used to cut and collage pictures of wombats and objects, add natural materials and add details with pastels to create a funny scene.

Grade 1 & 2:

Artists responded to media art by creating their own artwork in response. Artists read the book ‘Under the love umbrella’ and used the concepts about family and how family make us feel loved and safe as inspiration to create an art piece. Artists used paint slicks to colour each part of the umbrella in the correct order of the colours of the rainbow. They then cut out that umbrella and pasted onto a black A3 paper. Artists then outlined the umbrella with a gold or silver paint slick to add emphasis, finished by using light cratons to draw fireworks above the umbrella. Artists finished the piece by adding their family and loved ones underneath their love umbrellas.

Grade 3 & 4:

Artists finished their Pete Cromer inspired art pieces. These artists experimented with value by showing one colour using different shades. Artists chose one colour and painted at least 6 different shades/tints to their templates to show their understanding of value. They then cut out these templates and carefully placed the shapes into the correct positioning to make either a wombat or lizard. They collaged these pieces on either a warm or cool background depending on their watercolour choice. Artists decorated their animals and added detail to their background using pastels.

Grade 5 & 6:

Artists continued their work on their projects this week. They continued planning for their artwork that expresses their idea. They prepared their canvas by choosing a colour/colours that support their idea. They covered their whole canvas (cardboard box) and considered their brush technique to ensure they created a well painted piece with texture yet also respecting the equipment. Artists have started to bring in recycled materials from home to assist them in creating their artworks, ensuring they are brought in clean/cleaned from any previous food so that they are suitable to use and store. We are super excited to see how these turn out!
