Teaching & Learning
BOOK WEEK
Last week, we celebrated Book Week. All students across the school had the opportunity to enjoy books from the Children's Book Council Australia Award shortlist. Students voted SNAP! as their favourite book, with Frank's Red Hat a very close second.
Curriculum Day
During the recent curriculum day, the teaching team looked at Croydon SDS whole school approach. A whole-school approach will ensure that all students receive explicit daily instruction in reading and writing that meets their developmental needs and is delivered in a way that is age-appropriate.
The literacy approach that has been selected is ‘Comprehensive Literacy for All’ which is based on the work of Karen Erickson and David Koppenhaver. This approach caters to the needs of all our students, with a particular focus on students who are AAC users and or working in the emergent literacy space.
Staff were excited to develop resources that will be engaging for students working with letters and words. We will continue further professional learning, and we further increase our skills and knowledge of how to teach the essential life skill of literacy.
Literacy Week
Indigenous Literacy Day is the 6th of September, and International Literacy Day is the 8th of September. The focus of both these days is to acknowledge the importance of literacy for all. We here at Croydon SDS believe that literacy is a fundamental human right, and therefore, next week will be Literacy Week all week long. We want to shine a light on the critical role that literacy plays in every person's life and to celebrate the importance of developing literacy skills for all our students.
